Synopsis Paying the Professoriate by : Philip G. Altbach

How are professors paid? Can the "best and brightest" be attracted to the academic profession? With universities facing international competition, which countries compensate their academics best, and which ones lag behind? Paying the Professoriate examines these questions and provides key insights and recommendations into the current state of the academic profession worldwide. Paying the Professoriate is the first comparative analysis of global faculty salaries, remuneration, and terms of employment. Offering an in-depth international comparison of academic salaries in twenty-eight countries across public, private, research, and non-research universities, chapter authors shed light on the conditions and expectations that shape the modern academic profession. The top researchers on the academic profession worldwide analyze common themes, trends, and the impact of these matters on academic quality and research productivity. In a world where higher education capacity is a key driver of national innovation and prosperity, and nations seek to fast-track their economic growth through expansion of higher education systems, policy makers and administrators increasingly seek answers about what actions they should be taking. Paying the Professoriate provides a much needed resource, illuminating the key issues and offering recommendations.

Synopsis Scholarship Reconsidered by : Ernest L. Boyer

Shifting faculty roles in a changing landscape Ernest L. Boyer's landmark book Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate challenged the publish-or-perish status quo that dominated the academic landscape for generations. His powerful and enduring argument for a new approach to faculty roles and rewards continues to play a significant part of the national conversation on scholarship in the academy. Though steeped in tradition, the role of faculty in the academic world has shifted significantly in recent decades. The rise of the non-tenure-track class of professors is well documented. If the historic rule of promotion and tenure is waning, what role can scholarship play in a fragmented, unbundled academy? Boyer offers a still much-needed approach. He calls for a broadened view of scholarship, audaciously refocusing its gaze from the tenure file and to a wider community. This expanded edition offers, in addition to the original text, a critical introduction that explores the impact of Boyer's views, a call to action for applying Boyer's message to the changing nature of faculty work, and a discussion guide to help readers start a new conversation about how Scholarship Reconsidered applies today.

Synopsis Education by : James Walker Benét

Current discussions of education from Jenck's "Inequality "to Coleman's recent controversial pronouncements on desegregation orders and "white flight" concentrate on the efficacy of educational reform. The articles in this anthology, collected from two issues of the journal "Social Problems, "all consider this topic. The volume is divided into six sections, each exploring different aspects of education. In an introductory essay the editors state the theme of the work and outl i ne the approaches and focuses of the individual essays. Daniels and Benet provide a framework within which the reader can digest and interpret the various contributions, and raise a series of questions intended to guide future educational research. They maintain that only interdisciplinary study can enable researchers to understand the play between individual aspirations and interconnecting social systems and institutions in the development of the growing exasperation with (or indifference to) the schooling question. Originally sponsored by the Society for the Study of Social Problems, this work provides refreshing insights into the nature of contemporary education and explores new areas of research not previously discussed. It follows a "social system" approach to education and advocates it as a model for future researchers. Serves an "important role in the current assessment of American education. "Ray C. Rist, Cornell University

Synopsis The Academic Profession in Europe: New Tasks and New Challenges by : Barbara M. Kehm

This book is the first of several with the results of a collaborative European project supported by the European Science Foundation on changes in the academic profession in Europe (EUROAC). It provides a short description of the ESF EUROHESC programme and the particular forms of international collaborative research projects which are funded under the umbrella of this programme. It then outlines the EUROAC project. This project has chosen three foci (governance, professionalisation, academic careers) to analyse changes in the work of the academic profession. The first results in the form of in-depth literature reviews constitute the content of the book. These eight literature reviews about the state of the art of existing research feature the various dimensions of the overall theme. A particular emphasis is put on factors leading to changes in the work tasks of the academic profession in Europe and how the academic profession is coping with these new challenges. Thus, the book provides a state of the art account of existing research about the following themes: main results of previous studies on the academic profession; the academic profession and their interaction with new higher education professionals; professional identities in higher education; extending work tasks: civic mission and sustainable development; academic careers in academic markets; the changing role of academics in the face of rising managerialism; the influence of quality assurance, governance, and relevance on the satisfaction of the academic profession.
