Yankee whaling, shore whaling, and modern whaling were sometimes occurring simultaneously. Each type of whaling went through periods of discovery, stability, and then a gradual decrease as the products lost their markets or the number of whales began to wane as some species moved toward commercial if not actual extinction due to over-fishing. Small whaling operations from California, called shore whaling, continued from the 1850s until Secretary of Commerce Maurice Stans (19691972) whistled down the industry in 1971.

While taking a critical look at the labor and social issues related to timber, the story of labor, immigration, and development around the San Francisco Bay region is told through the lens of an archaeological case study of a major player of the timber industry between 1885 and 1920. Timber, Sail, and Rail recounts the mill operations and broadly examines its intersections with other industries, such as shipping, brick manufacture, rail companies, lime production, and other lesser enterprises. Three seasons of archaeological fieldwork, as well as ethnography and regional archival work, are examined to emphasize technological and labor components at the historic Loma Prieta mill.

Davenport is perched on cliffs approximately 90 feet above sea level and 10 miles north of the city of Santa Cruz. The Swiss Italian dairymen who settled on the north coast of Santa Cruz County in the 1860s quickly adapted to raising cattle and farming in the surrounding fields. This thriving agricultural area began with dairies and then quickly expanded to include niche crops like artichokes and brussels sprouts. Surrounded by rich lime deposits, Davenport was, at one time, the largest cement producer in the nation. This book is an excursion through the history of this intriguing area of California.

Both Britain and the United States have had a long history of harbouring foreign political exiles, who often set up periodicals which significantly contributed to community-building and political debates. However, this varied and complex journalism has received little attention to date, particularly regarding the languages in which it was produced.
