Synopsis The Poems of Mrs. Anne Bradstreet (1612-1672) by : Anne Bradstreet

Excerpt from The Poems of Mrs. Anne Bradstreet (1612-1672): Together With Her Prose Remains; With an Introduction by Charles Eliot Norton When it was proposed to me, not long since, to write an introduction to the edition of the poems of Mrs. Anne Bradstreet which "The Duodecimos" were about to issue, many reasons compelled me to decline the task. The request, however, led me to take up once more, after an interval of many years, the poems of "the tenth Muse," as Mrs. Bradstreet was termed on the title-page of the first edition of her verses, and I turned to the elaborate and excellent edition of them published, thirty years ago, by Mr. John Harvard Ellis. After looking them through, I came on the "Elegy upon the truly pious, peerless, and matchless gentlewoman Mrs. Anne Bradstreet," written by my ancestor the Reverend John Norton, of Hingham. Synopsis Mistress Bradstreet by : Charlotte Gordon

Though her work is a staple of anthologies of American poetry, Anne Bradstreet has never before been the subject of an accessible, full-scale biography for a general audience. Anne Bradstreet is known for her poem, To My Dear and Loving Husband, among others, and through John Berryman's Homage to Mistress Bradstreet. With her first collection, The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up in America, she became the first published poet, male or female, of the New World. Many New England towns were founded and settled by Anne Bradstreet's family or their close associates -- characters who appear in these pages.
