Synopsis The Feeding of Nations by : Mark Gibson

In the last decade, the world has grown richer and produced more food than ever before. Yet in that same period, hunger has increased and 925 million remain underfed and malnourished. Exploring this troubling paradox, The Feeding of Nations: Re-Defining Food Security for the 21st Century offers a glimpse into how the simple aspiration of global foo

Synopsis The Oliver-Sharpey Lectures on the Feeding of Nations by : Ernest Henry Starling

Excerpt from The Oliver-Sharpey Lectures on the Feeding of Nations: A Study in Applied Physiology When the council of the Royal College of Physicians honoured me with an invitation to deliver the Oliver-Sharpey Lectures, I was entirely absorbed, as Chairman of the Royal Society Food (War) Committee and as Scientific Adviser to the Food Ministry, in the scientific aspects of the national food supply. The still larger aspect of the same subject - viz. the apportionment of the available world supplies among the allied countries - was brought to my notice by my co-operation, as British Delegate, in the labours of the Inter-allied Scientific Food Commission. At that time the provision of food for the ensuing year, both for ourselves and for our allies, seemed very precarious, and likely to demand the utmost care, co-operation, and forethought, if the fighting powers of the Allies were to be maintained at their highest efficiency. Synopsis Hunger in War and Peace by : Mary Elisabeth Cox

At the outbreak of the First World War, Great Britain quickly took steps to initiate a naval blockade against Germany. In addition to military goods and other contraband, foodstuffs and fertilizer were also added to the list of forbidden exports to Germany. As the grip of the Blockade strengthened, Germans complained that civilians-particularly women and children-were going hungry because of it. The impact of the blockade on non-combatants was especially fraught during the eight month period of the Armistice when the blockade remained in force. Even though fighting had stopped, German civilians wondered how they would go through another winter of hunger. The issue became internationalised as civic leaders across the country wrote books, pamphlets, and articles about their distress, and begged for someone to step in and relieve German women and children with food aid. Their pleas were answered with an outpouring of generosity from across the world. Some have argued, then and since, that these outcries were based on gross exaggerations based more on political need rather than actual want. This book examines what the actual nutritional statuses of women and children in Germany were during and following the War. Mary Cox uses detailed height and weight data for over 600,000 German children to show the true measure of overall deprivation, and to gauge infant recovery.
