Synopsis The Noble Art of the Sword by : Tobias Capwell

Accompanying a major international exhibition at the Wallace Collection (May - September 2012), this book celebrates the artistic and cultural importance of the sword, as a symbol of power and prestige, as a flamboyant fashion statement and as an icon of the Age of Discovery. It will feature weapons and related works of art from the Wallace Collection as well as other great collections of arms and armor; never-before-seen illustrated works on fencing drawn from the library of the 8th Lord Howard de Walden; and portraits, prints, and drawings that will help place the Renaissance civilian sword in its social and artistic context. It will also explore the ancient origins of the modern sport of fencing, one of only nine original Olympic events practiced since the first Olympiad of the modern era of 1896, revealing a place in history where art and sport converged.

Synopsis Ancient Art of Chinese Long Straight Sword by : Jack Chen

The Chinese Straight Sword, or Jian, is perhaps the weapon that represents Chinese swordsmanship the most. Rarely seen nowadays in Chinese martial arts is the practice of a 2-handed Long Straight Sword. In this book, I've translated the Straight Sword chapter in 武備志 (Wu Bei Zhi), a 400 years old Chinese military manual, as well as offer my own interpretation. I hope my work will help you in practicing this art, as well as preserve and promote it for further generations to appreciate. Jack Chen

Synopsis The Art of Sword Combat by : Joachim Meyer

This sixteenth-century German guide to sword fighting and combat training is a crucial source for understanding medieval swordplay techniques. Following his translation of Joachim Meyer’s The Art of Combat, Jeffrey L. Forgeng was alerted to an earlier version of Meyer’s text, discovered in Lund University Library in Sweden. The manuscript, produced in Strasbourg around 1568, is illustrated with thirty watercolor images and seven ink diagrams. The text covers combat with the longsword (hand-and-a-half sword), dusack (a one-handed practice weapon comparable to a sabre), and rapier. The manuscript’s theoretical discussion of guards sheds significant light on this key feature of the historical practice, not just in relation to Meyer but in relation to medieval combat systems in general. The Art of Sword Combat also offers an extensive repertoire of training drills for both the dusack and the rapier, a feature largely lacking in treatises of the period and critical to modern reconstructions of the practice. Forgeng’s translation also includes a biography of Meyer, much of which has only recently come to light, as well as technical terminology and other essential information for understanding and contextualizing the work.

Synopsis Theonite by : M. L. Wang

Joan Messi has spent thirteen lonely years hiding her supernatural abilities from her parents, her classmates, and everyone in her white bread suburban community. However, her little world of secrets is shattered when a pair of strangers arrive from a parallel dimension on the hunt for a nameless criminal. Now, after a lifetime of wondering how she got her powers, Joan might have found the beginnings of an answer. For Daniel Thundyil and his father, elemental powers and ego-maniacal supervillains are nothing new-although this is the first time a mission has brought them to a parallel dimension. Daniel's main concern in this new world isn't the looming threat of a godlike killer; it's fitting in at a school where the food is flavorless, everyone writes backwards in an ancient alphabet, and all the racial hierarchies seem to be reversed.

Synopsis Burgundian Poleaxe by : Jason Smith

"The pollaxe is a fearsome weapon, the chivalric weapon par excellence of the late Middle Ages. It provided the knight with a powerful armour-breaching weapon, delivering tremendous force with its blade or hammerhead, while doubling as a short spear with its sharpened ends. Wielded on foot in both friendly tournaments and lethal duels, it was also used on the battlefield. Not surprisingly, such an important weapon figures prominently in surviving medieval martial arts manuscripts from Germany and Italy, and was written about as late as the 1630s, well after the armoured knight's apogee. Written in the mid-15th century for the Burgundian court -- at the time the most extravagant in medieval Europe, but also trapped between France and England in the bloody, final phase of the Hundred Years War -- the manuscript Le Jeu de la Hache ('Axe-Play') is both the most complete study of this deadly weapon, and the oldest known martial arts text in the French language. In this new translation and interpretive guide, Francophone and martial artist Jason Smith presents a complete translation of Le Jeu, detailed, photographic reconstructions of its many techniques, and a short primer on the basics of axe-combat, creating a complete curriculum for actually training in this unique, medieval martial art. Combined with an historical overview of the manuscript's origins, authorship and patron, and a detailed biography of Jacques de Lalain, a famed Burgundian axe-fighter and contemporary member of the same knightly order for whom the work was commissioned, Burgundian Poleaxe: The Noble Art of Chivalric Axe Combat is a modern training manual, but also a window into knightly culture at the waning of the Middle Ages."--
