This book examines the sustainability transition theory in the context of urbanization in China, tracing the development of eco and low-carbon cities. It examines how ideas on building eco-cities and low-carbon cities travel from nation to nation, how they are adopted in the Chinese administrative context and what role inter-scalar actors play in getting the ideas transferred, translated and operationalized on the ground. Offering an overarching theoretical framework that incorporates all urban sustainability experiments in China, the book conducts a comprehensive analysis of the master plans of these new towns and summarizes the normative transition targets of sustainable urban experiments. It explores how they differ from each other and how they influence transition dynamics in practice. By examining four eco and low-carbon new towns deemed representative of current major approaches to sustainability transition management in China, the book provides a detailed depiction of generic transition management and explains the different transitional trajectories for each type of sustainable urban experiment. It demonstrates how subnational-level and city-level transitions mediate the national transition. Through a thorough inquiry into inter-scalar dynamics, institutional arrangements and techno-social innovations in sustainable urban experiments, the book links generalized transition rules and specific contexts to present a full view of the challenges, failures and territorial problems of eco and low-carbon new towns. The structural phase transition is one of the most fundamental problems in solid state physics. Layered transition-metal dichalcogenides provide us with a most exciting area for the study of structural phase transitions that are associated with the charge density wave (CDW). A large variety of structural phase transitions, such as commensurate and incommensurate transitions, and the physical proper ties related to the formation of a CDW, have been an object of intense study made for many years by methods employing modem microscopic techniques. Rather recently, efforts have been devoted to the theoretical understanding of these experimental results. Thus, McMillan, for example, has developed an elegant phenomenological theory on the basis of the Landau free energy expansion. An extension of McMillan's theory has provided a successful understanding of the successive phase transitions observed in the IT- and 2H-compounds. In addition, a microscopic theory of lattice instability, lattice dynamics, and lattice distortion in the CDW state of the transition-metal dichalcogenides has been developed based on their electronic structures. As a result, the driving force of the CDW formation in the IT- and 2H-compounds has become clear. Furthermore, the effect of lattice fluctuations on the CDW transition and on the anomalous behavior of various physical properties has been made clear microscopically.

Maintaining the importance of socio-economic issues in devising transitional justice mechanisms, this book examines the widespread practice of land grabbing in Afghanistan. On 3 September 2003, 100 armed police officers bulldozed around 30 homes in the Sherpur neighborhood of Kabul, Afghanistan, evicting over 250 people. Historically, the land was part of the property of the Ministry of Defense, of which a zone was allocated to the ministry’s employees who had built homes and had lived there for nearly 30 years. After the demolition, however, the land was distributed among 300 high-ranking government officials, including ministers, deputy ministers, governors and other powerful warlords. Land grabbing in Afghanistan has become a widespread practice across the country. Based on over 50 semi-structured interviews with key informants and group discussions with war victims and local experts in Kabul, the current book examines the relevance of transitional justice discourse and practice in response to this situation. Following a critical criminological concern with social harm, the book maintains that it is not enough to consider a country’s political history of violent conflict and the violation of civil and political rights alone. Rather, to decide on appropriate transitional justice mechanisms, it is crucial to consider a country’s socio-economic background, and above all the socio-economic harm inflicted on people during periods of violent conflict. This original and detailed account of the socio-economic challenges faced by transitional justice mechanisms will be of interest to those studying and working in this area in law, politics, development studies and criminology.

Despite enormous technical and scientific advances in medicine, neglected tropical diseases continue to be a major challenge in many regions of the world. As a result, the health systems of developing countries are overwhelmed by a double burden of disease, one represented by common health problems and another represented by these diseases. This situation generates wear and tear in all system components, making it ineffective, but also causes the gaps in health to become increasingly larger. This book provides general information on the problem of neglected tropical diseases. It is a current and updated reference to the problem in question that provides examples of the way in which health systems deal with neglected tropical diseases by seeking innovative solutions.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2023 in the subject Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 2,0, University of Erfurt, language: English, abstract: Reducing global reliance on fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, and coal) as sources of energy generation is a critical component of curtailing the negative impacts of climate change on societies and livelihoods. At the same time, the share of renewable energy sources (including wind, solar, hydro, and geothermal) must be increased, a process referred to as "energy transition". The already dire global warming situation also requires increasing renewable energy generation in regions with relatively small contributions to global greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). While much research has been conducted on the political economy of energy transitions in industrialized nations, political economy aspects of energy transitions in SSA have not received much analytical attention. This thesis thus seeks to examine how energy policy priorities are directed in Namibia. As an upper-middle income country with enormous potential for domestic renewable energy generation, Namibia’s energy transition still faces some considerable political and economic challenges. These challenges include a heavy reliance on energy imports and concerns around energy security. To demonstrate energy policy priorities by the Namibian government, I performed a Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) of strategic energy policy documents and speeches issued by the Namibian government. The analysis shows that energy security and reaching universal energy access constitute the main concerns of the Namibian government. It also suggests that fossil fuel utilization and increased renewable energy generation as policy priorities are not viewed as conflicting.
