Synopsis The Massachusetts General Hospital Guide to Depression by : Benjamin G. Shapero
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is one of the most prevalent psychiatric disorders, with a lifetime prevalence rate of roughly 20%. MDD is a leading cause of disability and premature death worldwide, leads to greater impairment in work functioning than other chronic medical conditions, and has an estimated annual cost of $210 billion in the US. The proposed text is designed for mental health professionals and will present state-of-the-art treatment options that are used in the Depression Clinical and Research Program (DCRP) at the Massachusetts General Hospital. The text provides different treatment options so that providers can ‘think outside the box’ of conventional interventions. The introductory sections discuss general themes about diagnosing and treating depression. The major body of the book, however, consists of chapters organized under the topics of new medication, new psychotherapy, alternative treatments, and consideration of specific populations and how to modify interventions to best treat these patients. Each chapter begins with a case vignette to illustrate key characteristics of the disorder process or treatment and reviews the history, research support, and new advances of these topics. In addition, the chapters include a description of how to apply this topic in treatment and frequently asked questions and answers. This book will be a unique contribution to the field. Existing guides focus on individual treatments of Depression, or include brief descriptions of interventions as a whole. The DCRP has consistently been a forerunner of clinical treatments for depression and often treats challenging cases of this disorder. This book will provide a practical and useful resource with wide applicability.

Synopsis A Deeper Shade of Blue by : Ruta Nonacs
Depression affects women almost twice as often as men, with about one in four women suffering from it in her lifetime. While depression may strike at any time, studies show that women are particularly vulnerable during their childbearing years. Despite the increasing awareness of this deeply concerning issue, many studies and health professionals still continue to focus almost solely on postpartum depression, ignoring the fact that depression is just as likely to affect women while they're trying to conceive and during pregnancy. Now, in this comprehensive, empathetic, and candid book, Dr. Ruta Nonacs, a senior member of the Center for Women's Mental Health at Massachusetts General Hospital and mother of two children herself, confronts the seldom talked-about issues of pregnancy-related depression, including: Becoming pregnant while being treated for depression Infertility-related depression and the effects of fertility treatments Understanding the effects of maternal depression on spouses and family Postpartum depression and anxiety Nonacs also addresses the many complicated issues in a woman's life during the span of her childbearing years -- education, career, marriage, childbearing, and child rearing -- and discusses the ways in which depression often takes hold during potentially stressful times. Nonacs identifies many of the symptoms of depression associated with pregnancy and discusses treatments and cures, as well as ways to minimize effects of depression on family and friends. Straightforward and honest, as well as emotionally sensitive and deeply moving, A Deeper Shade of Blue gives every woman who has suffered from pregnancy-related depression the information she needs to get the best care for herself, during pregnancy and beyond.

Synopsis Pharmacotherapy For Depression And Treatment-resistant Depression by : George I Papakostas
This unique ground-breaking work, authored by renowned Harvard-based researchers G I Papakostas and M Fava, represents, by far, the most comprehensive compilation to date of medical studies and reports involving the use of antidepressants for the treatment of major depressive disorder, one of the most prevalent and devastating medical illnesses afflicting mankind today. Given the breadth of the scientific literature focusing on the use of antidepressants for major depressive disorder, this work represents an invaluable tool for clinicians as well as scientists in search of a reference manual to help guide them through the field. The book is organized into four parts; each part focusing on a separate theme that will facilitate the reader to precisely access particular information of interest, whether be it clinical or scientific in nature. Each part is then sub-divided into several thematic chapters, which are enriched with tables and figures citing results from the most influential studies in the field. Finally, clinical and research “pearls” are listed throughout the book in bullet-point fashion to help summarize the available knowledge-base in a user-friendly format.

Synopsis The Massachusetts General Hospital Handbook of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy by : Timothy J. Petersen
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has a growing evidence base that supports its efficacy in treating a wide range of psychiatric disorders and has been adapted for use with more complicated patient populations and for different stages of psychiatric illness. As the first Massachusetts General Hospital-branded text on the subject, this is a cutting-edge tool that is unlike any current book on CBT. The authors for this handbook are among the world’s foremost experts in their specialty area and are actively engaged in dynamic research evaluating the efficacy of CBT as well as identifying mechanisms of action for this treatment. This title provides in-depth coverage of the historical background of the development of CBT, a comprehensive review of relevant outcomes data, a survey of mechanisms by which CBT exerts its effect, and, most importantly, a take away “tool box” of CBT strategies and techniques that can be immediately implemented in clinicians’ practices. The Massachussetts General Hospital Handbook of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy reaches and improves the clinical practices of a broad base of front line mental health practitioners, including psychiatrists and therapists.
