Synopsis The Feejee Mermaid and Other Essays in Natural and Unnatural History by : Jan Bondeson
In his new collection of essays, Jan Bondeson tells ten fascinating stories of myths and hoaxes, beliefs and Ripley-like facts, concerning the animal kingdom. Throughout he recounts—and in some instances solves—mysteries of the natural world which have puzzled scientists for centuries. Heavily illustrated with photographs and drawings, the book presents astounding tales from across the rich folklore of animals: a learned pig more admired than Sir Isaac Newton by the English public, an elephant that Lord Byron wanted to employ as his butler, a dancing horse whose skills in mathematics were praised by William Shakespeare, and, of course, the extraordinary creature known as the Feejee Mermaid. This object became the foremost curiosity of London in the 1820s and later in the century toured the United States under the management of P. T. Barnum. Bearing a striking resemblance to a wizened and misshapen monkey with a fishtail, the mermaid was nonetheless proclaimed a genuine specimen by 'experts.' Bondeson explores other zoological wonders: toads living for centuries encased in solid stone, little fishes raining down from the sky, and barnacle geese growing from trees until ready to fly. In two of his most fascinating chapters, he uncovers the origins of the basilisk, considered one of the most inexplicable mythical monsters, and of the Vegetable Lamb of Tartary. With the head and body of a rooster and the tail of a snake, the basilisk was said to be able to kill a person with its gaze. Bondeson demonstrates that belief in this fabulous creature resulted from misinterpretations of rare events in natural history. The vegetable lamb, a mainstay of museums in the seventeenth century, was allegedly half plant, half animal: it had the shape of a little lamb, but grew from a stem. After examining two vegetable lambs still in London today, Bondeson offers a new theory to explain this old fallacy.

Synopsis The Mermaid’S Tail by : Sophia Delaat
The Mermaids Tail tells the story of the Universal Feminines emergence in history of humanity as a viable force in evolution. The soul qualities of compassion and regard for all human beings are what is demanding the redefinition of societys biggest questions. Without an equal voice in the debate about war, education, care for the land or the elderly, only part of the problem can be understood. Sophia takes the reader from the mythological to an awakened imagination that can define what the Feminine voice really is. Her love of different cultures and ability to synthesize experience creates a series of impressions that illuminate what at first glance may appear as mundane. She shares hard-won insights into the sacredness of the many expressions of a One god. Initially, what can be read as irreverence exposes a greater truth reserved only for the courageous. The Mermaids Tail unmasks hidden meanings of the tales we were told as childrenthe mythology buried deep in the recesses of our minds. The book offers unexpected and delightful insights into creating deeper personal meaning, all tied together with well-crafted, often poetic, prose. Synopsis The Mermaid's Tale by : D.G. Valdron
THE MERMAID’S TALE In a city of majesty and brutality, of warring races and fragile alliances, a sacred Mermaid has been brutally murdered. An abomination, a soulless Orc is summoned to hunt the killer. As the world around the Orc drifts into war and madness, her search for justice leads her on a journey to discover redemption and even beauty in the midst of chaos. "He said the Arukh only had one word. It was their word for rage and for pain, for fighting and dying. It was a word spoken in sorrow and anger. It was the word they said to a world that didn't want them, that had no place for them. It was loneliness and defiance and in the end it was sorrow and surrender. 'Arrah' he told me, it was all the words the Arukh needed." “This book is violent and brutal and haunting and beautiful. If I could give this a sixth star, I would" - Michael R. Fletcher, Author of Beyond Redemption D.G. Valdron is an utterly fearless writer. Frankly, I think he's one of the most original writers available today. -- Amazing Stories Online “The Mermaid=s Tale is a fable of personhood wrapped in a murder mystery framed by a fantasy setting, peopled by familiar races that are presented in subtly original ways.” – Melanie Martila “I absolutely loved this book; it's already one I know I'll remember for a long time. I would never have thought a book about an orc would be one of the best existential works I've ever read.” - - Julia Pike-kelly
