Synopsis The Kuyper Center Review by : Gordon Graham
Some religious traditions -- such as Lutheran, Wesleyan, and Eastern Orthodox -- have aesthetically rich resources on which to draw for the renewal of arts in everyday life. In contrast, Calvinism has generally been suspicious of the arts. The essays in this volume attempt to explore new avenues of thought about Calvinism's relation to the arts. Part historical, part theological, and part practical, they offer a wide-ranging exploration of neo-Calvinism's relationship to the arts, both at a general level and in connection with specific art forms. Overall they suggest that the neo-Calvinism espoused by Abraham Kuyper can and should make more of the arts than the traditional view of Reformed Christianity might be thought to allow. Synopsis Abraham Kuyper by : Richard J. Mouw
Richard Mouw was first drawn to Abraham Kuyper s writings about public life in the turbulent 1960s. As he struggled to find the right Christian stance toward big social issues such as the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War, Mouw discovered Kuyper s Lectures on Calvinism and, with it, a robust vision of active Christian involvement in public life that has guided him ever since. In this short and personal introduction Mouw sets forth Kuyper s main ideas on Christian cultural discipleship, including his views on sphere sovereignty, the antithesis, common grace, and more. Mouw looks at ways to update and, in some places, even correct Kuyper s thought as he applies it to such twenty-first-century issues as religious and cultural pluralism, technology, and the challenge of Islam.

Synopsis The Problem of Poverty by : Abraham Kuyper
The text, translated and introduced by James Skillen, was originally a speech by Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) that opened the first Christian Social Congress in The Netherlands on 9 November 1891. His words not only illuminate with stark simplicity many of the enduring problems of poverty, they also bring a strong and pointed biblical message that has outlived Kuyper's time and place. Roger Henderson's essay "How Abraham Kuyper Became a Kuyperian" is included in the appendix.

Synopsis The Spirit in Public Theology by : Vincent E. Bacote
In The Spirit in Public Theology, Bacote shows how Dutch politician and church leader Abraham Kuyper lived a thoroughly Christian life, and explains why Christians need to follow Kuyper by taking their faith into the public sphere. Identifying the characteristics of a true Christian worldview, Bacote demonstrates the need for a public theology that stresses engagement between the church and the world. The Spirit in Public Theology should be required reading for pastors, students, and all Christians who want to take their faith beyond the four walls of the Church.
