Synopsis The Household of Jairus; Secrets, Lies & Miracles by : Kathy Zamonski

This novel is a rich exploration of two New Testament healings: the bleeding woman who touched the hem of Jesus's garment and the daughter of Jairus the Pharisee. The Gospel of Luke (8:40aEUR"48) sets the miracles on the same day as Jesus and a crowd make their way to the house of Jairus. Could there be a connection between the woman who has bled for twelve years and the twelve-year-old girl who has died? If so, how are they related? What desperation drives the weakened woman to push through the crowd and emboldens her to touch the hem of Jesus? What compels a strict, faithful Pharisee to step outside the confines of his beliefs and risk ridicule and shunning from his neighbors to seek help from a questionable, itinerant rabbi? How does life change for them after the women are healed? This moving story has emerged from the author's knowledge of and reflection on scripture along with careful research into the time and place of the event. Characters come to life as their stories unfold, revealing intimate portraits of life and love in Roman-occupied Capernaum. Ultimately, this is a story of newfound faithaEUR"that of Jairus and the members of his household as their belief in God's love and mercy is tested and transformed through the miracles of Jesus. The author has made every effort to present an accurate account of first-century life in Galilee during the lifetime of Jesus and the early years of Christian conversion that followed His resurrection. Anyone who has struggled with doubt and whose own faith has been tested will be inspired to learn how the members of a single household came to believe in miracles! Synopsis The Building Blocks of the Earliest Gospel by : Arthur J. Bellinzoni

This volume provides enough information about each story in the Gospel of Mark and about the gospel as a whole, in order to afford an informed understanding of the gospel. The evangelist was not writing a book for submission to a committee for inclusion in the Christian Bible. Rather, he was collecting existing oral and written tradition into a coherent narrative to promote, for his own Christian community, an understanding of the “good news” of Jesus the Messiah. The church to which the evangelist was writing, probably in Antioch of Syria, was likely already familiar with many of the stories from the church’s evolving liturgy. Christians gathered in people’s homes; there were no “churches” as we understand that word as a specific building for Christian worship. It was in such gatherings in homes that stories were told, perhaps as the basis for a message delivered by an elder of the church. Such stories illustrated some truth about Jesus or addressed an issue of importance to the church. In other words, these individual stories were developed to serve the needs of the Christian community. Historical accuracy was not a concern of the evangelist. Proclaiming Jesus as Messiah was his primary purpose.

Synopsis The Gospel of Luke by : I. Howard Marshall

The Gospel of Luke was written, says its author, as an historical account of the ministry of Jesus. Not only would it serve as the basis for a sound faith on the part of professing Christians, but it would also claim a place for Christianity in history. Christ's ministry, as Luke shows, is realized prophecy; it is that time during which God's promise of salvation was fulfilled. His teachings, healing, and acts of compassion are all part of the good news. In Luke's Gospel, Christ's message of salvation is directed to the weak, poor, and needy, with an emphasis on the importance of self-denial and of whole-hearted discipleship. Thus, while Luke is the most conscious historian of the Gospel writers, his history is a vehicle of theological interpretation in which the significance of Jesus is expressed. In this commentary I. Howard Marshall calls attention to the theological message of Luke the Evangelist. His primary purpose is to exegete the text as it was written by Luke, so that the distinctiveness of Luke's Gospel may be seen. Basing his commentary on the third edition of The Greek New Testament, Dr. Marshall also refers to many variant readings which are significant in this study. He provides fairly full information on the meanings of the Greek words used by Luke and shows which words and constructions occur frequently and are therefore characteristic of his style. It is by this meticulous analysis of the Greek that Luke's theological intentions can be objectively determined.
