Synopsis The Manual of Phonography (Classic Reprint) by : Benn Pitman
Excerpt from The Manual of Phonography It is natural, too, that many conscientious teachers, zealous to help their students over the road to phonographic proficiency in the short est possible time, should have worked out what they believe to be improved modes of presenting the system, and we have, therefore, had offered to us a remarkable variety of short-cut methods pur porting to teach the reporting style from the beginning. The essential fallacy which underlies these endeavors to impart a working knowledge of the abbreviated form of phonography before giving the student a rational understanding of the system in its broad, element ary aspect, has been generally recognized by enlightened teachers. Continued experience amply demonstrates that in phonography, as in some other things, the longest way 'round is the shortest way home. Sound reporting habits can not be developed by methods of instruc tion which neglect thorough training in the elementary parts of the system. The corresponding style, too often despised for its own sake, is found, after all, to be the safest and shortest road by which the learner may reach the coveted skill of the amanuensis or reporter. Synopsis American Manual of Phonography by : Elias Longley
Excerpt from American Manual of Phonography: Being a Complete Guide to the Acquisition of Pitman's Phonetic Shorthand The sound of e is represented in forty different ways. Ex amples: ea, as In each; ea-ae as in league; eye, as in keg/ed; eig, as in seignor; elf/ii, as in Leigh. We need not repeat that the sound of e in each of these words should be repre sented by the same letter; or that by substituting for the complex letter 6 a simple character that can be _made with one motion of the pen, seven-eights or nine-tenths of the la bor in writing would be saved. These are facts that are evi dent, after the illustrations are presented. 'and we might thus illustrate the unscientific mode of representing nearly every word in our language, with equally formidable results. But we will only state the melancholy fact, that the various sounds employed in speaking the English language are each represented in from four to forty ways, and that in the large, majority of cases two or more letters are required to do the service. It is also'true, -tha't there is no letter in the alpha bet that uniformly represents the safime' sound; thus, a has a different sound in each of the following words: ate, at, all.
