Synopsis The Extent of Singapore's Investments Abroad by : Samuel Bassey Okposin

First published in 1999, this volume explores extreme openness of the Singaporean economy to international trade through the role of Foreign Direct Investment in Singapore and Singapore’s investments abroad. It provides much valuable insight to how changes in the economic and policy environments impacted on the individual Singapore-based firms and their decision making processes. The book is particularly strong in the manner in which the firm level material is linked to the overall outflow of capital, the macro-level conditions and the established theoretical explanations for the export of capital. Samuel Bassey Okposin has four aims: to examine the causes of direct investment in Singapore’s economy, to investigate the motivation for Singapore firms to invest abroad, to explain overseas direct investment from Singapore and to examine Singapore’s overseas direct investment strategies, strengths and weaknesses, considering if the current trend of outward direct investment will continue into the new millennium.

Synopsis Singapore's Direct Investment in Sri Langka by : Tilak Abeysinghe

Apart from aggregate accounting of Singapore0́9s investment abroad, case studies on the performance of these investments in individual countries hardly exist. This paper is an attempt to compile such a study by focusing on Singapore0́9s investment in Sri Lanka. Singapore is one of the largest foreign investors in Sri Lanka though Sri Lanka is a small recipient of Singapore's total overseas investment. The bulk of Singapore's investment in Sri Lanka has been in service industries. As usual these investments have created many employment opportunities. However, because of high import dependence the Singapore firms in Sri Lanka have begun to generate trade surpluses only recently. Revealed comparative advantage indices combined with attractive fiscal incentives and low-cost factors of production indicate that there are large investment opportunities in the manufacturing sector that remain to be exploited. The ongoing war obviously has deterred the expansion of Sri Lanka's FDI base to its full extent.

Synopsis Singapore by : International Monetary Fund

This Selected Issues paper presents a background and recent policy developments for Singapore’s financial sector. The paper highlights that in 1968, important tax and regulatory incentives were introduced to attract foreign investment in the financial sector and boost financial sector activity. In particular, the government catalyzed the development of Asian Currency Units (ACUs) by exempting nonresident depositors from withholding tax on ACU deposits. The paper also examines the impact of the external environment on economic activity in Singapore. Competitiveness issues are also discussed.

Synopsis Foreign Direct Investments in Asia by : Chalongphob Sussangkarn

This book covers nine countries of ASEAN and the East Asian area, including major Asian countries, and compares their respective policies to attract Foreign Direct Investments (FDI). Through comparative study of FDI promotion policies, this book will give policy makers in the area of FDI promotion an overview and comparison of the FDI policies of other countries. In addition, researchers at graduate, post-graduate or professional level will gain from the econometric methodology and detailed definitions of various spillover effects (horizontal and vertical), which will be beneficial to their research. In addition to FDI policy comparison, this book focuses on the various spillover effects of FDI. It separates it into categories: own productivity effects; intra-industry spillover effects; and inter-industry spillover effects (forward and backward linkage effects). While most other studies have only taken econometric tests on own-productivity and intra-industry spillovers, a key advantage to this book is that it also covers the separate effects of inter-industry linkages. Through policy comparison and econometric tests on various spillover effects on economic growth, employment and exports, this book will give policy makers and researchers an innovative and constructive guide to FDI.
