Synopsis The International Dental Journal, 1893, Vol. 14: A Monthly Periodical Devoted to Dental and Oral Science (Classic Reprint) by : James Truman

Excerpt from The International Dental Journal, 1893, Vol. 14: A Monthly Periodical Devoted to Dental and Oral Science Fifty years ago the symptoms of inflammation apparently coin cided with what could be seen with comparatively low powers of the microscope. The web-membrane of the frog was fastened upon a piece of cork, hollowed out. A drop of caustic ammonia was applied, or it was touched with a red-hot glass rod, and the result of' the irritation was observed mainly, if not exclusively, in the vascular system of the web-membrane. The current of the blood, which was seen to be normal before the irritation, soon afterwards became irregular and slackened, then oscillating to and fro, and at last arrived at a complete standstill, - the so-called stasis. Most of the pathologists agreed that by the irritation a rapid contraction of the vessels was produced, soon terminating in a paralysis of the walls of the blood-vessels, which latter did not offer any resistance to the pressure of the blood-current. At the same time an inundation of' the tissues of the web-membrane with a liquid had occurred, often mixed with extravasated blood, and after twenty-four hours a num ber of granular corpuscles were seen suspended in the liguid, which was termed exudate. These corpuscles or cells were thought to have originated in the exudate itself, and were named exudate cells. The process of inflammation was evidently a disturbance in the blood and the blood-vessels, and, since all diseases at that time were attributed to a certain mixture or crasis of the blood, the pathologists holding these views were called humoral patholo gists, with whom all diseases were due to a faulty mixture of the blood, - so-called dyscrasia. Synopsis The International Dental Journal, 1900, Vol. 21 by : James Truman

Excerpt from The International Dental Journal, 1900, Vol. 21: A Monthly Periodical Devoted to Dental and Oral Science Mr. F. J. Bennett, l.d.s. (eng), in a paper entitled The Ending and Mending of Caries, suggests that the old maxim, which ays, What can't be ended must be mended, represents the point of view from which a large majority of dentists regard the subject of dental caries. They cannot end the advent of caries, therefore they devote all their energies to mending its destructive effects. He further suggests that the success in mending has tended to lessen the desire to end, or, rather, in the sense in which he uses this word, to prevent that which makes mending necessary. Had there been less resource in the mending; had the case admitted of no half-measures; had the dangers of caries been more deadly, more widespread attention and an unremitting efl'ort to the discovery of a prevention and ending of caries would have been made. He re viewed the efl'orts made to discover the cause of caries which have led up to the present accepted theories, and, reasoning from the suc cess attending preventative measures in lessening other germ-caused diseases, urged that there was in this suficient encouragement to stimulate effort to find some practical means of lessening if not end ing the necessity of mending dental caries.' Synopsis The International Dental Journal, 1892, Vol. 13: A Monthly Periodical Devoted to Dental and Oral Science (Classic Reprint) by : James Truman

Excerpt from The International Dental Journal, 1892, Vol. 13: A Monthly Periodical Devoted to Dental and Oral Science The old man who had lost all but two of his teeth and thanked God that those met, had some conception Of the value of artica lation. Many people with the mouth half full of teeth could not thank God for more masticating surface than this Old man bad, because their teeth strike together so badly that only a few are capable of mastication. The fact that such are Often pretty healthy people does not in the least prove that a very limited masticating surface is not most deleterious in its general effect. I believe the perfect articulation of the teeth is the true physiological basis towards which our operations should be directed. I have been criticised for assuming a perfect articulation as a standard, because I have not been able to Show an absolutely perfect articulation; but this criticism is misleading and unjust. Excerpt from The International Dental Journal, 1896, Vol. 17: A Monthly Periodical Devoted to Dental and Oral Science Electric heat differs from all other forms of heat in that it is not itself a process of combustion, neither is it a chemical action, nor one of friction. It does not consume and does not emit. But, apparently Without any cause, the conductor of the current rises in temperature and radiates this pure heat of Which we avail our selves. Synopsis Oral Health, 1913, Vol. 3 by : Wallace Seccombe

Excerpt from Oral Health, 1913, Vol. 3: A Monthly Journal Devoted to the Furtherance of Individual and Community Health by the Advancement of Dental Science and Oral Hygiene So much has been said by those who do not understand the question that at the present time there is a danger that the very object sought for may not be secured. What is within reason and will give the desired results is not so much a Minister of Health as the collecting to gether of the scattered and isolated medical and health units which are to be found in the federal service, and co - ordinat ing them under a Deputy Minister of Health. There is fully enough work even now for the employment of such federal Officer, and if he is given that which the Commission of Con servation of Canada has recommended, viz., a federal lab oratory, which would be the workshop and centre around which and in which the medical members of the staff could gather, work, and be trained, it is not indulging in any idle prophecy to say that there would be such a stimulus given to health work throughout the whole Dominion as has never been witnessed under the present method of disorganization. The work of federal health need not, indeed cannot, over lap that now carried on lby the various provinces. It should be co-ordinated with that of all the provinces, having for its Object the bettering of the health conditions of the people, the prevention of sickness and suffering and the carrying on of research work in the interests of our people. Health Authorities Agree in Urging a Canadian Federal Department of Health. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis The International Dental Journal, 1890, Vol. 11 by : James Truman

Excerpt from The International Dental Journal, 1890, Vol. 11: A Monthly Periodical Devoted to Dental and Oral Science Our forefathers may have been savages; but they were clever and observant ones. After organizing their own rude arts, they turned beasts into servants; they founded agriculture; planted the grape. This fruit was surely antediluvian, for we are told that Noah, on leaving the ark, planted a vineyard, drank of the wine, The editor and publishers are not responsible for the views of authors of papers published in this department, nor for any claim to novelty, or otherwise, that may be made by them.
