Synopsis The Days of Wee Willie, Old Cy and Baseball War by : Chuck Kimberly
This account of the four baseball seasons of 1900 through 1903 seeks to capture the flavor of the period by providing yearly overviews from the standpoint of each team and by focusing more deeply on 30 or more players of the era--not only such legendary stars as Cy Young and Willie Keeler, but also relative unknowns such as Bill Keister and Kip Selbach. Each team section is supplemented by a table providing the significant batting and pitching statistics for each regular team member. The major theme of the period was the baseball war between the National and American leagues from 1900 to 1903. But the broad multi-season, multi-team view allows varying the focus. The pennant races receive due attention but there are other aspects of the baseball drama, such as: the aging star who finds a way to extend his period of dominance (Cy Young); the young, unpolished phenom whose raw talent enables him to excel (Christy Mathewson); and the fierce competitor who risks injury to help his team (Joe McGinnity or Deacon Phillippe).

Synopsis Driving off the Map by : Sharon MacFarlane
A bartender who discovers magic on a winter night, a pair of losers taking a baking class, and a middle-aged woman who goes on a wild limo ride with the ghost of John Diefenbaker. These are a few of the amazing array of characters who live in, or near, Sharon MacFarlane’s fictional village of Palliser, a community struggling to survive in an age of rural depopulation. Whether its a terrifying drive on a frozen river ("Ice Road") or a cancelled trip ("We Didn’t Go to Len’s This Summer"), each of the stories in Driving off the Map takes us, with a character, on a journey toward epiphany. MacFarlane understands these people, and she tells their secrets with humour and compassion. Her prose is as unadorned, yet as teeming with hidden life and beauty, as the prairie she evokes.

Synopsis Lighthouse by : Kingsley Osei-Karikari
A slap awakened the neighborhood. Then mama poked her head through the door and apologized to the onlooking neighbors. "It's all fixed now," she declared. The broken fridge was indeed fixed. Mama fixed things with her hands. She had to. "See you later, mama." I descended the hill and went to work. Come, work with me. I'm 7 and I'm a roadside seller. I promise it's not that bad. All you must do is carry your merchandise, run next to the moving car, and sell to the woman sitting shotgun. Try to keep up, and by the time you're 13, your legs will be very tired. Or maybe not. After all, you're only reading a book. But what about my legs? And what about mama's hands? Will they get tired? I want to take you on a journey that begins on a hill in Ghana. Relax, and endure.
