Synopsis Circe’s Palace by : Nathaniel Hawthorne

"Circe's Palace" is a short story that draws inspiration from Greek mythology and the myth of Circe, a powerful sorceress from Homer's "Odyssey." In the story, Hawthorne reimagines the myth in his unique style. The narrative follows a group of sailors who, like Odysseus' men, encounter the enchantress Circe on an isolated island. She invites them into her palace and offers them a mysterious and alluring drink, much like the wine she gave to Odysseus' crew, which turned them into animals. As the sailors partake in the drink, they gradually undergo a transformation, experiencing altered states of being. The story explores themes of enchantment, illusion, and the power of desire. It delves into the idea of losing one's sense of self and reality when subjected to temptation and seduction. Hawthorne's "Circe's Palace" is emblematic of his fascination with myth, allegory, and the darker aspects of the human psyche. It serves as a literary reimagining of the classical myth, adding Hawthorne's own depth and symbolism to the narrative. The story is a prime example of Hawthorne's style and his interest in exploring the complexities of human nature, often through allegorical and symbolic storytelling. In "Circe's Palace," readers are invited to ponder the consequences of succumbing to seductive and enchanting illusions, with Hawthorne's characteristic blend of romantic and dark romantic themes.

Synopsis Circe's Island by : Eden Phillpotts

He is not dead; but there are worse things than death... When his father goes missing on the mystical isle of Aea, Amphion knows something must be done. Convinced that the island’s mistress—the vindictive and temperamental goddess Circé—will spare his father’s life, Amphion sets off on a bold rescue mission. Accompanied only by his wise pet snake-dragon Simo, the young man insists he and his father will be able to outwit the enchantress. But only Circé of the Braided Hair knows what awaits them in her private island menagerie... “The book should be perused on a lazy summer day, preferably...on the shores of some sunny lake, or at least, if this is all that is available, in a hammock slung in some retired spot.” —The Saturday Review, 1926 Eden Phillpotts was born in India in 1862, but hailed from the United Kingdom from his early childhood forward. Known as a prolific young adult and mystery novelist, he penned about 250 works in his lifetime, including The Farmer’s Wife, a comic play which Alfred Hitchcock later directed as a silent film. Later in his career, he explored his modern philosophy in a wealth of fantasy and early science-fiction novels.

Synopsis MER by : M. D. Ironz

MER is the fifth volume of THE STEWARD series, an epic contemporary tale in which folklore and fantasy enmesh with physics and forensics. Ellen Doyle must accept two facts. Firstly, she is named heir to the Stewardship of the hidden Grand Portal to the Multiverse, which unfortunately doesn't come with instructions. Secondly, and perhaps more unsettling, many of the creatures of myth and folklore are real--some of whom hide in plain sight. Strange things happen to Ellen and the people around her. Some go missing; some die. The authorities investigate, frustrated at the scarcity of evidence. An earnest young detective is smitten with Ellen, a potentially dangerous distraction that threatens to compromise the integrity of the growing number of baffling cases. Life for all involved will never be quite the same. Ellen and her friends withstood the trials and tribulations they faced in Volumes 1 through 4 of the series (Domaine Delafaire, Realms of Possibility, Alas The Best Laid Plans, and Storm Haven). Yet, in karmic irony, she will now be called upon to meet the more significant and most personal challenges she could imagine, with an entire realm and its unaware inhabitants at risk, the renown festive holiday destination, the water world, MER. How can an entire realm suddenly be at risk, and only a handful of perplexed people be aware? How can organized-crime threaten realms of the Multiverse with such perverse and rampant drug addiction? Is this a long-term strategy to create and control an immense black market, or a far more subtle and sinister bid for ultimate power? Perhaps even worse, will the steadily increasing frequency of necromantic incidents herald a resurgence of roaming legions of ravenous deceased, led by another Lord of the Dead? Ellen Doyle, Steward of the Grand Portal of the Realm of Man, there's a call for you . . .

Synopsis Short Fiction by : Henry Kuttner

Henry Kuttner was a prolific science fiction and horror author. His first story was published in 1936, and from there he wrote, under a set of pen names, a large number of short stories, novels, and comic strips, up until his early death in 1958. A lot of his work was penned in collaboration with his wife C. L. Moore, who co-wrote at least two of the stories in this collection. Kuttner was a friend of H. P. Lovecraft—he wrote a set of stories specifically set in the Cthulhu mythos—and while he was primarily a science fiction writer, there is a streak of Lovecraftian darkness running through the majority of his work. Even in his most optimistic tales, the characters often end up with more problems than they bargained for—or at least finish feeling no happier than before. The short stories in this collection are those currently known to have passed into the U.S. public domain, arranged in order of publication. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
