Synopsis The Collected Fiction of William Hope Hodgson Volume 1: Boats of Glen Carrig & Other Nautical Adventures by : William Hope Hodgson

The first of five volumes collecting the complete fiction of William Hope Hodgson, an influential early twentieth-century author of science fiction, horror, and the fantastic. William Hope Hodgson was, like his contemporaries Algernon Blackwood and Arthur Machen, one of the most important, prolific, and influential fantasists of the early twentieth century. His dark and unsettling short stories and novels were shaped in large part by personal experience (a professional merchant mariner for much of his life, many of Hodgson’s tales are set at sea), and his work evokes a disturbing sense of the amorphous and horrific unknown. While his nautical adventure fiction was very popular during his lifetime, the supernatural and cosmic horror he is most remembered for only became well known after his death, mainly due to the efforts of writers like H. P. Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith, who often praised his work and cited it as an influence on their own. By the later half of the twentieth century, it was only his weird fiction that remained in print, and his vast catalog of non-supernatural stories was extremely hard to find. Night Shade Books’s five-volume series presents all of Hodgson’s unique and timeless fiction. Each volume contains one of Hodgson's novels, along with a selection of thematically-linked short fiction, including a number of works reprinted for the first time since their original publication. The first of the five-volume set, The Boats of the "Glen Carrig" and Other Nautical Adventures, collects all of Hodgson’s series nautical fiction, including the Sargasso Sea Story cycle. The Complete Fiction of William Hope Hodgson is published by Night Shade Books in the following volumes: The Boats of the “Glen Carrig” and Other Nautical Adventures The House on the Borderland and Other Mysterious Places The Ghost Pirates and Other Revenants of the Sea The Night Land and Other Romances The Dream of X and Other Fantastic Visions

Synopsis The Boats of the "Glen Carrig" by : William Hope Hodgson

"The Boats of the ""Glen Carrig"" is a horror novel by English writer William Hope Hodgson, first published in 1907. Its importance was recognised in its later revival in paperback by Ballantine Books as the twenty-fifth volume of the celebrated Ballantine Adult Fantasy series in February 1971.The novel is written in an archaic style, and is presented as a true account, written in 1757, of events occurring earlier. The narrator is a passenger who was traveling on the ship Glen Carrig, which was lost at sea when it struck ""a hidden rock"". The story is about the adventures of the survivors, who escaped the wreck in two lifeboats. The novel is written in a style similar to that used by Hodgson in his longer novel The Night Land (1912); with long sentences, containing semicolons and numerous prepositional phrases. There is no dialogue in the usual sense. While The Night Land is an early example of science fiction, Boats is primarily a survival and adventure story with elements of horror, in the form of monsters. The monsters do not necessarily require a supernatural explanation - i.e., are not ghosts, as in Hodgson's novel The Ghost Pirates (1909) or some of his Carnacki stories -, but there are also few explanations given. Boats in its strong use of concrete detail evokes a lost world, and is also an interesting case study in human relationships and class mores, as the class distinctions between the narrator and the crew members are broken down by the shared situation they find themselves in, but are eventually re-established.The text was out of copyright and was available online via Project Gutenberg and other sources until 2017 when it was published by Night Shade Books as a part of the book named The Boats of the ""Glen Carrig"" and Other Nautical Adventures: The Collected Fiction of William Hope Hodgson, Volume 1. An unabridged recording of the novel is available in the form of a podcast."

Synopsis The Night Land by : William Hope Hodgson

"This to be Love, that your spirit to live in a natural holiness with the Beloved, and your bodies to be a sweet and natural delight that shall be never lost of a lovely mystery.... And shame to be unborn, and all things to go wholesome and proper, out of an utter greatness of understanding; and the Man to be an Hero and a Child before the Woman; and the Woman to be an Holy Light of the Spirit and an Utter Companion and in the same time a glad Possession unto the Man.... And this doth be Human Love...." "...for this to be the especial glory of Love, that it doth make unto all Sweetness and Greatness, and doth be a fire burning all Littleness; so that did all in this world to have met The Beloved, then did Wantonness be dead, and there to grow Gladness and Charity, dancing in the years."

Synopsis Naked Lunch @ 50 by : Oliver C. G. Harris

"Naked Lunch" was banned, castigated, and recognized as a work of genius on its first publication in 1959, and fifty years later it has lost nothing of its power to astonish, shock, and inspire. A lacerating satire, an exorcism of demons, a grotesque cabinet of horrors, it is the Black Book of the Beat Generation, the forerunner of the psychedelic counterculture, and a progenitor of postmodernism and the digital age. A work of excoriating laughter, linguistic derangement, and transcendent beauty, it remains both influential and inimitable. This is the first book devoted in its entirety to William Burroughs masterpiece, bringing together an international array of scholars, artists, musicians, and academics from many fields to explore the origins, writing, reception, and complex meanings of "Naked Lunch." Tracking the legendary book from Texas and Mexico to New York, Tangier, and Paris, "Naked Lunch@50" significantly advances our understanding and appreciation of this most elusive and uncanny of texts.Contributors: Contributors: Keith AlbarnEric AndersenGail-Nina AndersonTheophile AriesJed BirminghamShaun de WaalRichard DoyleLoren GlassOliver HarrisKurt HemmerAllen HibbardRob HoltonAndrew HusseyRob JohnsonJean-Jacques LebelIan MacFadyenPolina MackayJonas MekasBarry MilesR.
