Synopsis The Classics in South America by : Germán Campos Muñoz

This volume examines the long and complex history of the Greco-Roman tradition in South America, arguing that the Classics have played a crucial, though often overlooked, role in the self-definition in the New World. Chronicling and theorizing this history through a detailed analysis of five key moments, chosen from the early and late colonial period, the emancipatory era, and the 20th and 21st centuries, it also examines an eclectic selection of both literary and cinematographic works and artefacts such as maps, letters, scientific treatises, songs, monuments, political speeches, and even the drafts of proposals for curricular changes across Latin America. The heterogeneous cases analysed in this book reveal cultural anxieties that recur through different periods, fundamentally related to the 'newness' of the continent and the formation of identities imagined as both Western and non-Western – a genealogy of apprehensions that South American intellectuals and political figures have typically experienced when thinking of their own role in world history. In tracing this genealogy, The Classics in South America innovatively reformulates our understanding of well-known episodes in the cultural history of the region, while providing a theoretical and historical resource for further studies of the importance of the Classical tradition across Latin America.

Synopsis Spanish Colonial Literature in South America (Classic Reprint) by : Bernard Moses

Excerpt from Spanish Colonial Literature in South America No intelligent person is likely to deny the importance of ofiicial documents as the basis of a nation's history; but these docu ments do not tell the whole story. There are social activities, currents of national thought, and waves of popular sentiment, which are not fully described either in laws or governmental proclamations. Tradi tion sometimes conveys a knowledge of these aspects of society, but tradition undergoes such modifications in the course of time that it does not render the same account to all later generations or centuries. Only what is written remains fixed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis Reminiscences of South America by : John Hawkshaw

Excerpt from Reminiscences of South America: From Two and a Half Years' Residence in Venezuela Between the course over which Captain Head ran races against time, and the Republic to which these pages relate, about forty de grees of latitude intervene; the one is almost beneath the equator, the other is in the temperate zone, and they are about as far asunder as England is from the North Pole. Some of the countries in Europe - Italy or Switzerland for instance, might be almost overspread by the leaves of the multitude of books that have been written respecting them; whereas, on the contrary, with regard to South America, I am disposed to think, that all the books of this kind that relate to it, would scarcely serve as: a déjeuné for the small colony of insects that established itself in my library when I was residing there. Synopsis A Voice from South America (Classic Reprint) by : Allen F. Gardiner

Excerpt from A Voice From South America First then, with respect to education, - and I would here premise, that it would be as unfair, as it would be unwise, to compare the progress of the countries we are Speaking of, with that of any of the settled States of Europe or North America. The circum stances Of South America are peculiar she has had much to struggle against. During the dominion Of Spain, which continued for about three centuries, no encouragement was given to the Creole population, to make any advances in mental improvement, in consequence of the monopolies and reservations in favour of her European subjects. NO sooner was the colossal power of Spaininthe Indies shaken to its centre, than a host of sovereign states emerged from the wreck. Private jealousies, and public feuds, like rank weeds in a neglected soil, were immediately engendered, and it has too tre quently happened that, instead of mutually assisting each other, when that friendly aid was most needed. Synopsis South America by : James Bryce

Excerpt from South America: Observations and Impressions America from his own travels and studies, has given me valuable help in many ways. I have also to return my respectful thanks to the Governments of Chile and Brazil, who were good enough to extend to me facilities for travel on their railways, and to the Governments of Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, and Uruguay for other courtesies. To many states men and scholars in these six republics, too numerous to mention by name, as also to not a few of my own fellow-countrymen from Britain and Canada who are there settled, I am indebted for hospitality, for private acts of kindness, and for valuable information. Synopsis The Real South America (Classic Reprint) by : Charles Domville-Fife

Excerpt from The Real South America As I am under an obligation to so many people for kind assistance, hospitality and advice, always readily given, both at home and in South and Central America, it seems a little unappreciative and, perhaps, ungenerous, to name here only a few of these and leave the many unmentioned yet, that is all that is possible in the preface of any book of travel; which fact is my excuse if I offend by omission.
