Synopsis The British Bee Journal, Bee-Keepers' Record and Adviser, 1892, Vol. 20 (Classic Reprint) by : Thomas William Cowan

Excerpt from The British Bee Journal, Bee-Keepers' Record and Adviser, 1892, Vol. 20 It is a very curious feature in the intelligence of bees, or rather of the hand which guides them, this precaution which they take of, narrowing the entrances of their hives when they are threatened by the invasion of an enemy. The fact was already known in the days of Aristotle. I have only read about it in his book on animals since I have observed it in nature; he says it is with propolis that they narrow their entrances, but without any details as to the way they set about it, or of the form they give to this strange work. Synopsis The British Bee Journal, Bee-Keepers' Record and Adviser, 1891, Vol. 19 (Classic Reprint) by : Thomas William Cowan

Excerpt from The British Bee Journal, Bee-Keepers' Record and Adviser, 1891, Vol. 19 Mr. Neighbour was engaged, with the aid of Mr. Duncan Keir, who was introduced to him by 'the Renfrewshire Bee-keeper, ' in packing and forwarding humble-bees to New Zealand during winter in a torpid state, for the purpose of fructifying red clover. The importation of Cyprian, Syrian, and Holy Land bees also claimed much of Mr. Neighbour's attention, and he was the first to introduce Carniolan bees into this country. At the German Department of the Exhibition of 1851, Mr. Neighbour purchased the improved metal plates for making wax foundation, and it was with these ib.t the foundation we used when we first commenced bee-keeping was made - a very different article to what is now used. Mr. Neighbour enjoyed unusual opportunities of becoming acquainted with the leading apiarian celebrities of the day; amongst others, Iiev. William Charles Cotton and Dr. Coster. Synopsis The British Bee Journal, Vol. 18 by :

Excerpt from The British Bee Journal, Vol. 18: Bee-Keepers' Record and Adviser The present raw, damp, chilly weather is far more trying to bees than good hard frost. Get candy ready, so that it may be placed on feed holes at the first favourable Opportunity. Probably four-way sections may never become so generally used as the two-way, owing to the greater difficulty in packing them, but certainly, so far as we can learn, all who use thom find them, as a rule, more compactly built out and filled. In fact pop-holes are very rare. 'e would therefore recommend any of our readers who may not yet have given them a trial to get a few in against the requirements of next season.
