Synopsis The Book Shop by : Donna Lagone

The sign over the door reads “Book Shop Proprietor T. Dearing” in large gold letters. For those who can read, this is a place of insight, knowledge, and power. For all others going about their daily business, this shop holds mysteries and evil ideas best avoided at all costs. The shop on London Bridge Tam inherited from his father, Giles, who received the land on which the bookshop now stands, from Henry V, for honorable service during the battle of Agincourt. Tam is a content man who enjoys living in the company of the books so dear to his heart. One day an unexplained package arrives from France containing a copy of “The Cambria Homily”, written by Augustinian Monks in the early eighth century on the island of Skellig Michael off the Irish coast. Cautiously he opens the Illumination and finds a message personally addressed to him, “May You Find Honor Lost.” Tam sets out to uncover the mystery of who sent the book and what is meant by honor lost. Tam travels with a group of Franciscan Monks and Pilgrims for it is unwise to travel alone for fear of being robbed and killed by bandits who prowl the road to Calais. On his quest for truth he learns about unconditional love in the face of abject poverty and cruelty beyond.

Synopsis The Bookshop Book by : Jen Campbell

Every bookshop has a story We're not talking about rooms that are just full of books. We're talking about bookshops in barns, disused factories, converted churches and underground car parks. Bookshops on boats, on buses, and in old run-down train stations. Fold-out bookshops, undercover bookshops, this-is-the-best-place-I've-ever-been-to-bookshops. Meet Sarah and her Book Barge sailing across the sea to France; meet Sebastien, in Mongolia, who sells books to herders of the Altai mountains; meet the bookshop in Canada that's invented the world's first antiquarian book vending machine. And that's just the beginning. From the oldest bookshop in the world, to the smallest you could imagine, The Bookshop Book examines the history of books, talks to authors about their favourite places, and looks at over three hundred weirdly wonderful bookshops across six continents (sadly, we've yet to build a bookshop down in the South Pole). The Bookshop Book is a love letter to bookshops all around the world. 'A good bookshop is not just about selling books from shelves, but reaching out into the world and making a difference' David Almond (The Bookshop Book includes interviews and quotes from David Almond, Ian Rankin, Tracy Chevalier, Audrey Niffenegger, Jacqueline Wilson, Jeanette Winterson and many, many others.)

Synopsis The Haunted Bookshop by : Christopher Morley

The Haunted Bookshop (1919) is a novel by Christopher Morley. Although less popular than Kitty Foyle (1939), a novel adapted into an Academy Award-winning film, The Haunted Bookshop is a fast-paced thriller that deserves a modern audience. From unassuming beginnings as a tale about a lovelorn advertising salesman who visits a charming bookstore, The Haunted Bookshop quickly morphs into a story of paranoia, stalking, and kidnapping. “If you are ever in Brooklyn, that borough of superb sunsets and magnificent vistas of husband-propelled baby-carriages, it is to be hoped you may chance upon a quiet by-street where there is a very remarkable bookshop.” In need of a new client, Aubrey Gilbert steps into a bookstore on a quiet Brooklyn street. There, he meets Roger Mifflin, the store’s owner, who inundates the adman with information on the value of books. Although he fails to get Mifflin’s business, Gilbert is drawn to Titania Chapman, the man’s beautiful young assistant who just so happens to be the daughter of Gilbert’s most important client. As mysterious occurrences begin to pile up—a valuable book is stolen, Gilbert is assaulted, and a strange man is found lurking in the alleyway behind the store—it becomes clear that Titania is in grave danger. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Christopher Morley’s The Haunted Bookshop is a classic of American literature reimagined for modern readers.

Synopsis The Rise of the Modernist Bookshop by : Mr Huw Osborne

Concerned with the cultural and economic roles of independent bookstores, this collection considers how eight shops created during the modernist era exceeded their commercial functions to open the spaces of literary production. Understanding these unique social spaces on the threshold of commerce and culture provides a basis for comprehending how the changes to the physical contexts of the twenty-first century reading experience have affected our relationship to books and reading.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Bookshops are full of stories. The stories of bookshop owners, and all the books they read that made them fall in love with reading. The stories of authors, and why they wrote their first book. The stories of customers who walk through the door. #2 The book industry has changed a lot over the past few centuries. Bookshops are closing due to increased rents, business rates, and retail giants undercutting prices. But bookshops are still relevant because so much of our lives is spent on computers, and the idea of a shopping experience is more important than ever before. #3 Bookshops are still relevant today. They are magical places that instill a sense of wonder and adventure in children, and they offer a haven in a busy world for us to stop and think.
