One little event during this year has fixed itself very firmly in my mind; and I hope that it has done so from my conscience having been afterwards sorely troubled by it; it is curious as showing that apparently I was interested at this early age in the variability of plants! • With respect to science; I continued collecting minerals with much zeal. I must have observed insects with some little care. I almost made up my mind to begin collecting all the insects which I could find dead; for on consulting my sister I concluded that it was not right to kill insects for the sake of making a collection. • Life there was perfectly free; the country was very pleasant for walking or riding; and in the evening there was much very agreeable conversation; not so personal as it generally is in large family parties; together with music. Nothing has left a more vivid picture on my mind than these evenings at Maer. — from this book • Autobiography of Charles Robert Darwin; (12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882) was an English naturalist and geologist; best known for his contributions to evolutionary theory. Charles Darwin is the English naturalist whose work laid the foundation for evolutionary biology and theory. Darwin wrote his autobiography under the title Recollections of the Development of my Mind and Character in 1876. He wrote it for his family, but his son edited and published the autobiography five years after Darwin's death in 1882, removing some of the critical passages about God and Christianity.

Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) was an English naturalist who achieved lasting fame by producing considerable evidence that species originated through evolutionary change, at the same time proposing the scientific theory that natural selection is the mechanism by which such change occurs. This theory is now considered a cornerstone of biology, and has significantly affected other disciplines such as philosophy, psychology and anthropology.

'Man still bears in his bodily frame the indelible stamp of his lowly origin' On topics ranging from intelligent design and climate change to the politics of gender and race, the evolutionary writings of Charles Darwin occupy a pivotal position in contemporary public debate. This volume brings together the key chapters of his most important and accessible books, including the Journal of Researches on the Beagle voyage (1845), the Origin of Species (1871), and the Descent of Man, along with the full text of his delightful autobiography. They are accompanied by generous selections of responses from Darwin's nineteenth-century readers from across the world. More than anything, they give a keen sense of the controversial nature of Darwin's ideas, and his position within Victorian debates about man's place in nature. The wide-ranging introduction by James A. Secord, Director of the Darwin Correspondence Project, explores the global impact and origins of Darwin's work and the reasons for its unparalleled significance today.
