Synopsis The Anaemic Leukaemic by : John Fee

The first half of the book explains that the treatment is a brutal regime, but there are light-hearted moments. In the second half of the book, the author describes what he learned about cancer such as what cancer is, the prevalence of cancer, the role of the pharmaceutical industry, and how cancer is treated in the West as compared to complementary therapies in the East. He asks ‘Why me?’ and discovers physical, mental and spiritual reasons to explain why cancer decided to pay him a visit. The concept of miraculous or spontaneous remissions appears to be largely ignored by the medical profession but is a major interest to the author, along with other healing methods outside the Western orthodox model. The book finishes with a message of hope through the development of a ‘Simple Man’s Cancer Model’ which provides a framework for healing to take place based on personal experience, studying spontaneous healings, a large dose of common sense and a sprinkling of anecdotal evidence. The author suggests that certain changes need to take place within an individual for healing to occur. How the person makes those changes is a personal choice, as there are numerous healers, books, workshops and seminars where such information and healing can be obtained. The final chapter suggests that ‘Integrated Healthcare’ could be the next step forward and invites the reader to imagine and, more importantly, help to create a world without cancer.

Synopsis Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (Volume 5) by : Dorairaj Prabhakaran

Cardiovascular, respiratory, and related conditions cause more than 40 percent of all deaths globally, and their substantial burden is rising, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Their burden extends well beyond health effects to include significant economic and societal consequences. Most of these conditions are related, share risk factors, and have common control measures at the clinical, population, and policy levels. Lives can be extended and improved when these diseases are prevented, detected, and managed. This volume summarizes current knowledge and presents evidence-based interventions that are effective, cost-effective, and scalable in LMICs.

Synopsis Exercise Oncology by : Kathryn H. Schmitz

This groundbreaking book presents a unique and practical approach to the evolving field of exercise oncology - the study of physical activity in the context of cancer prevention and control. Presenting the current state of the art, the book is sensibly divided into four thematic sections. Following an opening chapter presenting an overview and timeline of exercise oncology, the chapters comprising part I discuss primary cancer prevention, physical activity and survivorship, and the mechanisms by which these operate. Diagnosis and treatment considerations are discussed in part II, including prehabilitation, exercise during surgical recovery, infusion and radiation therapies, and treatment efficacy. Post-treatment and end-of-life care are covered in part III, including cardio-oncology, energetics and palliative care. Part IV presents behavioral, logistical and policy-making considerations, highlighting a multidisciplinary approach to exercise oncology as well as practical matters such as reimbursement and economics. Written and edited by experts in the field, Exercise Oncology will be a go-to practical resource for sports medicine clinicians, family and primary care physicians, oncologists, physical therapy and rehabilitation specialists, and all medical professionals who treat cancer patients.

Synopsis Fanconi Anemia by : ... Schindler-Hoehn

Fanconi anemia (FA) is a rare genetic disease discovered 80 years ago by Guido Fanconi, an eminent Swiss pediatrician. It is characterized by short stature, skeletal anomalies, increased incidence of solid tumors and leukemias, bone marrow failure and cellular sensitivity to DNA damaging agents. Following a historical account, exemplary case reports and the current status of FA genes and their mutations, this volume discusses neoplasia in FA as well as current approaches to pre- and postnatal diagnosis. Further topics include revertant mosaicism as a kind of 'natural gene therapy' and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation as the only curative approach in FA. The final chapters investigate evolutionary aspects of the FA genes with special emphasis on the avian genome and the involvement of FA genes in recombinational types of DNA repair. Physicians and researchers in the fields of pediatrics, hematology, cancer, genetics, DNA repair and aging will benefit from understanding this disease, which illustrates the complex network of genomic maintenance systems that protect us from cancer and premature aging.

Synopsis Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation by : Hillard M. Lazarus

Since the original publication of Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation: Clinical Research and Practice, Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSC) has undergone several fast-paced changes. In this second edition, the editors have focused on topics relevant to evolving knowledge in the field in order to better guide clinicians in decision-making and management of their patients, as well as help lead laboratory investigators in new directions emanating from clinical observations. Some of the most respected clinicians and scientists in this discipline have responded to the recent advances in the field by providing state-of-the-art discussions addressing these topics in the second edition. The text covers the scope of human genomic variation, the methods of HLA typing and interpretation of high-resolution HLA results. Comprehensive and up-to-date, Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation: Clinical Research and Practice, Second Edition offers concise advice on today's best clinical practice and will be of significant benefit to all clinicians and researchers in allogeneic HSC transplantation.

Synopsis Haematology Case Studies with Blood Cell Morphology and Pathophysiology by : Indu Singh

Hematology Case Studies with Blood Cell Morphology and Pathophysiology compiles specialized case studies with specific information on various hematological disorders with Full Blood Examination (FBE or CBC), blood film images and pathophysiology of each condition. In addition, it provides basic information on how to recognize and diagnose hematological conditions that are frequently observed in the laboratory. Technicians and scientists working in core laboratories such as biochemistry labs or blood banks will find this book to be extremely thorough. Moreover, it can be used as a reference book by technicians, scientists and hematologists in every level of expertise in diagnosing hematological disorders. - Includes morphology of red cells, white cells and platelets - Provides images of actual blood slides under the microscope, showing the most important diagnostic features observed in each condition - Presents details that are considered difficult for beginners or non- hematologists, such as specific tests and techniques - Covers case studies that finish with the pathophysiology of the condition
