Synopsis Dunigan's American Catholic Almanac and List of the Clergy, for the Year of Our Lord 1858 by : Edward Dunigan and Brother
Excerpt from Dunigan's American Catholic Almanac and List of the Clergy, for the Year of Our Lord 1858: The 88d of the Independence of the United States The Publishers present this first yearly volume rather as an essay than as a finished work. It was necessary, to supply a deficiency, that the Almanac should be got out with all possible celerity, and it was not till after Christmas that, finding no house disposed to take it up, they began their preparations. The compiler had made no preparation for the task imposed suddenly upon him. California and New Mexico could not be heard from, and returns from Baltimore, Cleveland, and Saut St. Mary's, failed to reach him. The printers were unused to the work, and ingeniously added difficulties, such as p. 70 shows, where they absurdly, in making up, introduced the words Diocese of before Maryland. The errata are, therefore, larger than they should be; yet with all its faults the publishers ask a kindly treatment as they have done their best to supply a want; and have actually collected material, arranged, and published the work in less than six weeks. To meet wishes heretofore expressed, they have, where possible, eschewed statistics; and have arranged the dioceses by provinces, in geographical order, placing the diocese of the Archbishop first. All the dioceses are arranged on the same plan - the towns being in alphabetical order, to facilitate reference, and the names of the clergy in italics.
