Synopsis The Acquisition of English Restrictive Relative Clauses by Hungarian Learners of English by : Judit Kiss-Gulyás

"The present work uses the standard version of principles and parameters theory of Universal Grammar to address second language acquisition issues. It is assumed that comparative analysis of Hungarian and English based on the model enables the researcher to formulate precise and testable questions and the empirical research provides reliable answers." "The investigated area is the acquisition of English restrictive relative clauses by L1 Hungarian learners of L2 English. This area of grammar causes problems: most of these are proficiency-determined, but there are some which are observable even at fairly advanced levels. In the given framework it is postulated that some properties of parameters set differently for the L1 can be reset to the new language, whereas other properties seem to resist re-setting and remain non-native-like in the interlanguage of even near-native L2 English speakers of L1 Hungarian." "The book may interest pure and applied linguists, psycholinguists as well as practising teachers as it attempts to offer a possible answer to the often made observation: there are parts of L2 grammar which are relatively easy to acquire despite the language differences, yet there are several features that remain faulty or misunderstood despite teacher and learner effort."--BOOK JACKET.

Synopsis University Theses in Russian, Soviet and East European Studies, 1907-2006 by : Gregory Piers Mountford Walker

The bibliography records doctoral and selected masters' theses (over 3,300 in all) from British and Irish universities in the field of Russian, Soviet and East European studies. This is broadly interpreted to include all disciplines in the humanities and social sciences as they relate to the area of Russia, the former USSR and Eastern Europe. Taken as a whole, the work probably forms the fullest and longest record of British and Irish postgraduate research in any sector of area studies. Besides its primary function as a bibliographic tool, it makes it possible to trace the effects of academic developments, institutional policies, and the changes in direction in this highly diversified field of study over the last hundred years. Entries are arranged by subject and area, supported by full author and subject indexes to aid searching. Dr Gregory Walker is a former Head of Slavonic and East European Collections at the Bodleian Library, University of Oxford. The late John S.G. Simmons, OBE, was Senior Research Fellow and Librarian, All Souls College, Oxford.

Synopsis Community Action for Collective Goods by : Annamária Orbán

Human interaction breeds conflicts. Unresolved problems provide food for social sciences in general, and especially for political science a melting pot of different branches of social sciences, including philosophy, economics, sociology, psychology, etc. Political science tries to use all of these branches of the social sciences when examining how people, as a collective, try to resolve their conflicts. The theory of collective action a particular field of research in political science is concerned with the question of how people behave and act in groups when pursuing their common goals and how collective action for a collective good can, or cannot, take place. The author of this book tried to find a field of social life where collective action problems occur frequently and do not cease easily. Thus, the author selected Hungarian residential condominiums, where people have both their private properties and share common properties and facilities. The overall management of the cond

Synopsis Third Language Acquisition in Adulthood by : Jennifer Cabrelli Amaro

In recent years, researchers have acknowledged that the study of third language acquisition cannot simply be viewed as an extension of the study of bilingualism, and the present volume’s authors agree that a point of departure that embraces the unique properties that differentiate L2 acquisition from L3/Ln acquisition is essential. From linguistic, sociological, psychological, educational and cognitive viewpoints, it has become increasingly apparent that the study of L3/Ln acquisition can provide new evidence to help resolve ongoing debates in these areas of study. This volume uniquely provides a wide-ranging overview of current trends in the study of adult additive multilingualism from formal, psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic perspectives, adding new insights into adult multilingual epistemology. This collection includes critical reviews of L3/Ln morphosyntax, phonology, and the lexicon, as well as individual studies with unique language pairings including Romance, Germanic, Slavic, and Asian languages.

Synopsis The Reality of the Unreal by : Judit Borbély

In the nineteenth century the great cities underwent the most conspicuous transformation. The beauties and the dark side of urban existence soon came to be one of the central issues in contemporary literature and art. In The Reality of the Unreal, the works of four great English writers of the time are analyzed, with the focus on their representation of the city. Through the concrete image of London and Paris around the turn of the century as well as through the metaphorical role of the city as a concept, this booka new volume in the Philosophiae Doctores seriesprovides differing views about the age, as seen by H. G. Wells, George Gissing, Joseph Conrad, and Henry James. The books analysis arrives at the complex image of civilization at the end of the nineteenth century.

Synopsis Widening Contexts for Processability Theory by : Anke Lenzing

This book explores relationships between Processability Theory approaches and other approaches to SLA. It is distinctive in two ways. It offers PT-insiders a way to see connections between their familiar traditions and theories with other ways of working. Parallel to this it offers readers who work in other traditions ways of connecting with a research tradition that makes specific testable claims about second language acquisition processes. These dual perspectives mean that both beginning and established SLA researchers as well as those seeking to connect their work with views of language learning will find something of interest. Studies of multiple languages and multiple aspects of language are included. Chapters cover areas as diverse as literacy, language comprehension, language attrition and language testing.

Synopsis L3 Development After the Initial State by : Megan M. Brown-Bousfield

To date, the field of L3 acquisition research has had a heavy focus on the initial state of the L3 grammar. While this initial state research is critical to understanding L3 acquisition as a whole, in order for an explanatory understanding of language acquisition in the multilingual mind, the field needs to expand its scope beyond this area of focus. This volume brings together L3 acquisition and multilingualism researchers in order to discuss the state of the field and introduce new ideas related to the development of post-initial L3 knowledge, and the relationship among languages in the multilingual mind. It includes contributions related to syntactic, phonological, and lexical development beyond the L3 initial state. The purpose of this volume is to expand the current academic discussions within this field, by emphasizing the role of the developmental process in an L3 context, with the hope of inspiring further research in this domain.
