Synopsis New Technologies for Literacy and Adult Education by : Daniel A. Wagner

New technology can provide powerful new tools for enriching the lives of poor people and communities in unprecedented ways. At least that was the view of the G8 Digital Opportunities Task Force in 2001. A view that is upheld and further explored in the pages of this book. With an estimated 850 million illiterate people in the world today, this book explores how new information and communication technology (ICT) supports basic literacy and the information skills crucial for economic and social development.

Synopsis Innovative Adult Learning with Innovative Technologies by : Betty Collis

Innovations in adult learning are a complex mix of pedagogy, technology, organisation, strategy and vision. In this book, 17 cases representing state-of-the-art design and practice from nine different countries are presented, grouped around the themes of I. Innovative Instrumentation. II. Innovations in Learner Collaboration and III. Innovations in Practice. While all of the cases deal with innovative instrumentation (software or combinations of software and communication technologies), the six cases in section I offer a detailed look at software packages designed for some aspect of the innovation of adult learning, such as reducing information overload by intelligent tools or using a World-Wide Web environment for communication and learning. In section II, a variety of ways to innovate adult learning through collaborative activities are described, including learning scenarios that make effective use of collaboration and the technology and instrumentation that make collaboration at a distance possible.Section III describes innovative learning situations that have been successfully integrated into broad scale field settings, each focusing on a particular situation in which innovative technologies play a part.

Synopsis Improving Adult Literacy Instruction by : National Research Council

Virtually everyone needs a high level of literacy in both print and digital media to negotiate most aspects of 21st century life-succeeding in a competitive job market, supporting a family, navigating health information, and participating in civic activities. Yet, according to a recent survey estimate, more than 90 million adults in the United States lack the literacy skills needed for fully productive and secure lives. At the request of the U.S. Department of Education, the National Research Council convened a committee of experts from many disciplines to synthesize research on literacy and learning in order to improve instruction for those served in adult education in the U.S. The committee's report, Improving Adult Literacy Instruction: Options for Practice and Research, recommends a program of research and innovation to gain a better understanding of adult literacy learners, improve instruction, and create the supports adults need for learning and achievement. Improving Adult Literacy Instruction: Supporting Learning and Motivation, which is based on the report, describes principles of effective instruction to guide those who design and administer adult literacy programs and courses. It also explores ways to motivate learners to persist in their studies, which is crucial given the thousands of hours of study and practice required to become proficient. The booklet concludes with a look at technologies that show promise for supporting individual learners and freeing busy adults from having to be in a particular place in order to practice their literacy skills. Although this booklet is not intended as a "how to" manual for instructors, teachers may also find the information presented here to be helpful as they plan and deliver instruction.

This book highlights examples of innovative educational practices in the field of organized adult learning. Fifteen chapters present outcomes of collective research in the Innovations in Nonformal and Adult Education (INNAE) project. "Common Learning--Collective Research: Innovating Adult Education" (Werner Mauch, Uta Papen) describes the methodology and identifies five transversal or common issues that appeared in the case studies. Part II contains the case studies prepared by INNAE participants: "Innovating for Change: Women's Education for Empowerment: Analysis of the Mahila Samakhya Program in Banda District"; "Graduate Resource Advancement (GREAT): Non-Formal Exposure of Youth to Rural Development" (S.B. Ekanayake); "Question de Competences--The Competence Issue: Tool for Women" (Rachel Belisle); "And the Hammock Lingers On: Whither Theater-for-Development" (Hansel Ndumbe Eyoh); "The Community Health Workers' School of the Union of Palestinian Medical Relief Committees" (Jihad Mash'al); "Kenyan Experience on Training Adult Education Teachers through Distance Education" (Khalfan A.
