Excerpt from Tancred, or the New Crusade Tancaao was published in r847, and has sometimes been described as the last of a trilogy of political novels, its two predecessors being Com'ngrby and Sybil; but in reality the book deals much leas with the realm of politics than with the'realm of ideas. Tancred, Lord Montacute, though born in the purple, is pro foundly dissatisfied with his environment, and the keynote of the work is struck in his first conversation with his father, the amiable Duke of Bellamont. The Duke at the outset imagines that his son is uneasy at the prevalence of revolutionary notions, and reassures him by asserting that the common sense of the country and the fifty-pound clause wfll carry us through. But when Tancred goes on with such declarations as I wish I knew what was good and great, I would struggle to accomplish it, and asks, Is there such a thing as religious truth?
