One of the most pivotal works for understanding the environment that influenced the development of Qur'anic exegesis, this volume--originally written by Abdullah Ibn 'Abbas and Ibn Ya'qub al-Firuzabadi--offers valuable insight into the circulation and exchange of popular ideas between Islam, Judaism, and Christianity during the formative phase of Islamic exegesis. In addition, the work avoids elaborate theological, philosophical, and grammatical explanations, making it easily accessible to nonspecialists.

The Studies in the History and Culture of the Islamic Orient (STIO) is the series of “Supplements” to the journal Der Islam. Both are published by the Section for the History and Culture of the Near East in the Asian-African Institute of the University of Hamburg. The Section was established in 1908, before the foundation of the University of Hamburg. Under its first Director, C.H. Becker, it was the first academic centre in Germany in which teaching and research concentrated on the historical and cultural aspects of the Islamic world, and not just on philological issues. Many of Germany’s leading authorities in Islamic Studies have studied and/or taught here. The “Supplements” have maintained the same high quality and met the same high demands as the journal Der Islam and have published numerous studies on the history and culture of the Islamic world which have represented milestones in their relevant fields. The “New Series” of Supplements appearing since 2004 carries this tradition forward and provides a platform for publishing studies on the history and culture of the Islamic world from the beginnings of Islam up to the present day.

Sheikh Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami (325-412 AH) was the undisputed sheikh of Sufism in Khorasan during his lifetime. He authored 700 volumes on Su- fism and 300 in Hadith, in addition to works in Tafsir and other disciplines. A man who bore the markings of Divine acceptance, he was loved by common men and princes, yet politely declined the extravagant gifts of the latter. His works were so popular that swaths of people would gather to listen to his public readings and lectures. Among his works is acompilationof 40 hadiths on the subject of Sufism-spirituality in Islam-with his own chains of transmission returning to the Prophet , his companions, or the generation after them. Imam al- Sakhawi (831-902 AH), one of the erudite luminaries of Hadith science, produced a derivative work (known as a takhrij) in which he checked and graded al- Sulami's collection. He also provided corroborating transmissions (shawahid). While not all of the hadiths in al-Sulami's collection are authentic, the principles they demonstrate are, without doubt, central to Sufism, and, consequently, compliant with the noble Sharia. True Sufism is the spiritual dimension of Islamic Law. Anything that contradicts the Law is either fraud or misguidance. In addition to the translation of Sheikh al-Sulami's collection of 40 hadiths on Sufism, brief footnotes- gleaned and paraphrased from Imam al-Sakhawi's de- rivative text-are included in the following work.

Written by a number of Islamic religious authorities and Muslim scholars, this work presents the views and teachings of mainstream Sunni and Shi’i Islam on the subject of jihad. The renowned scholar and Sufi master, the late Dr Martin Lings (Shaykh Abu Bakr Siraj ad-Din) was working on a full translation of the Qur'an when he passed away. The Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought, who had commissioned Dr Lings to translate the Qur'an, and the Islamic Texts Society were granted access to his papers. "Rashid al-Din Maybudi, author of this Sufi commentary on the Quran, was a major twelfth-century scholar of Maybud, near Yazd in central Iran. This commentary, called Kashf al-asrar wauddat al-abriar [The Unveiling of the Mysteries and the Provision of the Pious], is one of the earliest and longest commentaries on the Quran in the Persian language, though a good portion of it is in Arabic. Maybudi explains select verses and their allusions (ishara); by this he means the manner in which the words and imagery can be understood as pointing to various dimensions of the soul's relationship with God. Maybudi's work also came to be known by the subtitle of the published Persian edition, Tafsir Khawaja Abdallah Ansari [Quran Commentary of Master Abdallah Ansari] because Maybudi wrote it after having studied the Quran commentary of Ansari (d. 1088), an influential scholar and Sufi saint from Herat." --
