Synopsis Sinner by : Ted Dekker

Full of mystery, intrigue, and mind-blowing twists, Sinner explores what happens when the idea of tolerance leads to intolerance. Some say roll with the punches. Drift with the tide. Nothing can stop the inevitability of change. There was a time when 300 Spartans disagreed with such mindless thinking and stood in the gap. Now it's time for 3,000 to stand in the gap. Sinner is the story of Marsuvees Black, a force of raw evil who speaks with wicked persuasion that is far more destructive than swords or guns. Beware all who stand in his way. It’s also the story of Billy Rediger and Darcy Lange, two unsuspecting survivors of a research project gone bad, who discover that they are perhaps the two most powerful souls in the land. Listen to them or pay a terrible price. And it’s the story of Johnny Drake, the one who comes out of the desert and leads the 3,000. Follow him and die. Sinner tells the story of a free land where people who worship as they please and say what they believe are suddenly silenced in the name of tolerance. Most will roll with the punches. Most will drift with the tide. But not all. Not the 3,000. Full-length suspense with a thread of fantasy Includes Author’s Note and Discussion Questions for book clubs Book three in the Paradise series: Showdown, Saint, and Sinner

Synopsis Surfanthood by : Mark Read

Surfanthood explores a simple analogy expanding the experiences of early ministry. The analogy goes like this: The waves are God's activity in the world. The surfer is us. The board is our activity/ministry/service. At best our activities, and boards, join with God's activity, the waves, to create something joyful, wondrous, and exciting. We submit to the wave and experience something beautiful. At worst we can wrestle and struggle, becoming increasingly tired, frustrated, and pained by what is happening until eventually the inevitable occurs; we get really hurt or we get out. A new possibility centers on five postures that servants adopt: They are non-professional, non-commercial, non-prescriptive, non-evangelical, and non-authoritative. Each chapter begins with a reality of surfing that finds a parallel in ministry. This reality gives a lens to explore an episode within Luke's Gospel which, as a complete Gospel, explores the question "How do I mature in service?" and then reflects on where we see the postures of surfanthood.

Synopsis Sinner, Sailor by : T. R. Rhoads

Sinner, Sailor is the autobiographical telling of the author’s navy career from 1945 until 1972, from World War II through Viet Nam. He joined the navy at seventeen seeking adventure and romance; he found both and much more. He went to Korea as a navy hospital corpsman in a marine unit, served at sea aboard a series of aircraft carriers, Boxer, Hancock, and Princeton, in the Pacific, and later as a medical service corps “mustang” officer aboard the carrier Constellation at the time of the Tonkin Gulf incident. Toward the end of that conflict he did a reprise of Korea, ashore in Viet Nam as medical liaison officer with the combined action force of the III Marine Amphibious Force. All battle and no liberty makes for a dull read, so he includes lighter moments of a sailor on liberty in San Diego, Los Angeles, Tijuana, Hong Kong, Osaka, Sasebo, Yokosuka; and of a navy officer in his prime on the loose in San Diego and New York City. Sex, sin, and sailing are not unknown. The author re-creates his experiences using narrative, dialogue, conflict and character as in a novel; telling of events as they happen with the immediacy of happening as it is read: “...Each morning I had to face Mr. Becker, who attempted to counsel me on the principals of leadership. I felt he was trying to change my inner self to him; trying to develop whatever traces of petty tyrant might be hiding in me into a true whipper of men, someone to be feared, an ideal Lange. “You’re going to be Lang’s relief,” he began,” the H Division Police Petty Officer. I need someone who can take charge, and shape up the men... It’ll be your job to make sure everyone in sickbay keeps busy, does their job, and follows orders. Kick ass and take names. Don’t try to make them like you; you’re not in a popularity contest.”... Chapter sixteen. The next day, I went to where she lived when she wasn’t working at the New Black Rose.We talked and joked and then we made love. Afterwards she began to look sad. “Whatsa-matta-you?” I asked. “You Christian?” she asked. I shrugged and said, “I guess so. Why..?” “Why you here, then?” she asked; angry and disillusioned at me and at herself. I was taken aback by her question. I began putting my clothes on. Chapter Sixteen. There are genuine heroes in the book; there are also bureaucrats, time servers, rogues, villains, and scoundrels. Life aboard a ship or ashore with the marines; or liberty in the fleshpots or at home with the family, has rarely been caught so realistically. A good read of the real McCoy.

He was a member of a rival gang with the nickname "The Reaper." That wasn't the kind of guy you put down roots with. Synopsis A Path Strewn With Sinners by : Wade Johnston

"Mark doesn't waste words in his Gospel. His Jesus, the Jesus, is a man on a mission, determined, racing. Mark doesn't waste words, but his words pack a punch and his brief descriptions beg for deep reflection. Like a passenger in a car driving quickly, we can easily miss the details of the landscape if we don't pay careful attention. Mark sets us on a race, but it's important to stop along the way. A Path Strewn with Sinners sets us on Jesus' race to the cross, but it also insists we take time to ponder, to notice what Mark notes, and what he doesn't. A master storyteller, Mark leaves room for us to ask questions of the text while at the same time giving us enough information to make that profitable. In so doing, He introduces us to Jesus in a most useful and unique way and makes our race well worth the effort, as A Path Strewn with Sinners shows."
