Synopsis Characterization of Porous Solids III by : F. Rodríguez-Reinoso

The objectives of the Third IUPAC Symposium on the Characterization of Porous Solids (COPS-III) were (1) to provide the opportunity for specialists to exchange ideas and new information on theoretical principles and methodology and (2) to generate proposals for the comparison and utilization of the many techniques now available for the characterization of porous solids. A successful outcome of the Symposium has been the final report of the IUPAC Subcommittee on Recommendations for the Characterization of Porous Solids, a summary of which is given in these proceedings. The edited papers included in the present volume have been selected from the 155 oral and poster presentations given at this symposium, which attracted 200 participants from 28 different countries. The following topics were discussed:1. Simulation and modelling of pore structures and pore-filling mechanisms2. Novel experimental techniques with particular reference to high-resolution techniques3. Model pore structures and reference materials4. Porous materials of technological importance. The wide range of materials and techniques described provide a useful and comprehensive reference source for academic and industrial scientists and technologists.

Synopsis The Science and Technology of Carbon Nanotubes by : T. Yamabe

Carbon Nanotubes (CNT) is the material lying between fullerenes and graphite as a new member of carbon allotropes. The study of CNT has gradually become more and more independent from that of fullerenes. As a novel carbon material, CNTs will be far more useful and important than fullerenes from a practical point of view, in that they will be directly related to an ample field of nanotechnology. This book presents a timely, second-generation monograph covering as far as practical, application of CNT as the newest science of these materials. Most updated summaries for preparation, purification and structural characterisation of single walled CNT and multi walled CNT are given. Similarly, the most recent developments in the theoretical treatments of electronic structures and vibrational structures are covered. The newest magnetic, optical and electrical solid-state properties providing a vital base to actual application technologies are described. Explosive research trends towards application of CNTs, including the prospect for large-scale synthesis, are also introduced. It is the most remarkable feature of this monograph that it devotes more than a half of the whole volume to practical aspects and offers readers the newest developments of the science and technological aspects of CNTs.

Synopsis Leading Edge Nanotechnology Research Developments by : Donald M. Sabatini

Nanotechnology is a 'catch-all' description of activities at the level of atoms and molecules that have applications in the real world. A nanometer is a billionth of a meter, about 1/80,000 of the diameter of a human hair, or 10 times the diameter of a hydrogen atom. Nanotechnology is now used in precision engineering, new materials development as well as in electronics; electromechanical systems as well as mainstream biomedical applications in areas such as gene therapy, drug delivery and novel drug discovery techniques. This book present simportant breakthroughs in the field from around the world.

Synopsis Handbook of Functionalized Carbon Nanostructures by : Ahmed Barhoum

This book highlights all newly reported carbon nanostructures including graphene and its derivatives, carbon nanotubes, metal organic frameworks, fullerenes, nanorods, nanospheres, nano onions, porous nanoparticles, nanohorns, nanofibers and nanoribbons, nanodiamonds, graphitic carbon nitrides, carbon aerogels and hydrogels, graphdiyne and graphenylene. It presents the historical development of carbon nanostructures technologies, different types and classifications, and different fabrication and functionalization techniques, including outer/inner surface functionalization and covalent and noncovalent functionalization. This Handbook discusses the unique properties of functionalized carbon nanostructures that can be obtained by modifying their structures, composition, and surface. It gives the reader an in-depth look at the current achievements of research and practice while pointing you ahead to new possibilities in functionalizing and using carbon nanomaterials. Finally, it covers the various applications of functionalized carbon nanostructures including adsorbents, additives, active materials in energy accumulating systems (batteries, hydrogen storage systems, and supercapacitors), filtering media, catalysts or supports for catalysts, sensors or substrates for sensors, additives for polymers, ceramic composites, metal and carbon alloys, glasses, digital textiles, and composite materials.

Synopsis Advances in Heterogeneous Material Mechanics 2008 by : Jinghong Fan

"The International Conference on Heterogeneous Material Mechanics (ICHMM) in Huangshan, China, June 3-8, 2008 follows the successful inaugural ICHMM held in ChongQing, China in June, 2004. The ICHMM series is the first international forum that focuses exclusively on various issues related to the behavior of heterogeneous materials in a broad sense. The object of the ICHMM is to present and publicize integrated scientific and engineering approaches to the measurement and modeling of phenomena at the interface of materials science, physics, chemistry, biology, and solid mechanics."--Preface, p. xxxix.
