Synopsis Study Guide for Human Mosaic by : Terry G. Jordan-Bychkov

Carrying forward the legacy of original author Terry Jordan-Bychkov, Mona Domosh and new coauthors Roderick Neumann and Patricia Price offer this thoroughly updated new edition of the acclaimed introduction to the cultural geography of the world today. The result is a text that maintains its original distinctive style while addressing contemporary issues and situations that students care about, most importantly, the continuing phenomenon of globalization. The Thematic Approach of The Human Mosaic The Human Mosaic introduces five themes in the opening chapter--culture region, cultural diffusion, cultural ecology, cultural interaction, and cultural landscape--then uses those themes as a framework for the topical chapters that follow. Each theme is applied to a variety of geographical topics: demography, agriculture, the city, religion, language, ethnicity, politics, industry, folk and popular culture. Through this organization, students are able to relate to the most important aspects of cultural geography at every point in the text.

Synopsis On Human Adaptive Strategy in an Unpredictable Environment by : Peter Briggs

The interaction between human subjects and environment is studied in detail. The task is a hill-climbing problem in which the hill is simply a randomly pivoting ramp function. The human varies two quantities, x sub 1 and x sub 2, while he observes changes in a third quantity z. Constraints are imposed upon the manipulation of x sub 1 and x sub 2, and upon the slope and possible orientation of the ramp; also, transition probabilities are introduced which govern the rotation of the ramp from one orientation to another. Assumptions concerning the mechanism of human choice behavior in this situation lead to the development of a single-parameter stochastic behavioral model. The expected performance of the model is compared with the experimentally determined average performance of human subjects. The results indicate that human adaptive strategy is essentially stochastic but is better described by a three-parameter model than by a single-parameter model; and certain nonstochastic elements in human adaptive strategy enable human subjects to consistently exceed the performance of both the single- and three-parameter stochastic models by a small margin, especially in highly variable environments. Synopsis The Adaptive School by : Robert J. Garmston

This 3rd edition of the award winning Adaptive Schools Sourcebook provides both a theoretical and practical guide for groups and teams to develop and focus their collaborative energies to improve teaching practices and enhance student-learning outcomes. In five sections: Becoming Adaptive, Collaboration Matters, Meetings are Teachers’ Work, Resources for Inquiry, and Conflict, Change and Community, the authors draw on decades of personal experiences in schools and research from multiple disciplines to present powerful tools and useful templates for structuring the work of productive professional communities in schools. Readers will learn ways to develop and sustain the fundamental elements for enhancing social capital in schools: distinguishing between dialogue and discussion, establishing seven norms of collaboration, automating language patterns for inquiry and problem solving, facilitating groups and data teams, engaging in productive conflict, and building community. The book offers links to video clips demonstrating key skills, inventories for assessing groups, instruments for assessing personal skills, and a collection of over 150 meeting strategies and facilitator moves for engaging group members in productive interactions.
