Synopsis The Road-Books and Itineraries of Great Britain 1570 to 1850 by : Herbert George Fordham
Originally published in 1924, this book provides a catalogue of the original titles of the road maps and itineraries produced for the roads of Great Britain between 1570 and 1850. Fordham, who published several other books on the subject of cartography, also provides a bibliography on the history of these road books, and provides more detailed chapter breakdowns for the larger itineraries in his catalogue. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in historical maps or the history of England, Scotland and Wales.

Synopsis Cartographies of Travel and Navigation by : James R. Akerman
Finding one’s way with a map is a relatively recent phenomenon. In premodern times, maps were used, if at all, mainly for planning journeys in advance, not for guiding travelers on the road. With the exception of navigational sea charts, the use of maps by travelers only became common in the modern era; indeed, in the last two hundred years, maps have become the most ubiquitous and familiar genre of modern cartography. Examining the historical relationship between travelers, navigation, and maps, Cartographies of Travel and Navigation considers the cartographic response to the new modalities of modern travel brought about by technological and institutional developments in the twentieth century. Highlighting the ways in which the travelers, operators, and planners of modern transportation systems value maps as both navigation tools and as representatives of a radical new mobility, this collection brings the cartography of travel—by road, sea, rail, and air—to the forefront, placing maps at the center of the history of travel and movement. Richly and colorfully illustrated, Cartographies of Travel and Navigation ably fills the void in historical literature on transportation mapping.

Synopsis Studies in Carto-Bibliography by : Herbert George Fordham
Excerpt from Studies in Carto-Bibliography: British and French, and in the Bibliography of Itineraries and Road-Books The papers here reprinted, after a more or less complete revision, have been thought worthy of rescue from the oblivion of the Transactions and other publications of various Societies and of private impressions. They represent considerable labour, spread over the past sixteen or seventeen years, in a domain of bibliographical study which has, in modern days, received but little attention. Indeed it will, it is believed, be found on examination that most of the matter incorporated in the present volume is both new in substance as a contribution to our systematic bibliographical knowledge and original in the form in which it is cast. Road-Books and Itineraries, although representing a not inconsiderable mass of printed and engraved books, published over a lengthy period of time, and containing much that is interesting in character and method, and some features of historical and geographical importance, seem never at any time to have received, as a bibliographical group, the slightest attention. Collections of County Maps in the British Isles are both rare, and, when attempted to be formed, have been for want of knowledge of their possibilities, usually very incomplete and ill arranged.
