Synopsis Load Testing of Bridges: Two Volume Set by : Eva Lantsoght

Load Testing of Bridges, featuring contributions from almost fifty authors from around the world across two interrelated volumes, deals with the practical aspects, the scientific developments, and the international views on the topic of load testing of bridges. Volume 12, Load Testing of Bridges: Current practice and Diagnostic Load Testing, starts with a background to bridge load testing, including the historical perspectives and evolutions, and the current codes and guidelines that are governing in countries around the world. The second part of the book deals with preparation, execution, and post-processing of load tests on bridges. The third part focuses on diagnostic load testing of bridges. Volume 13, Load Testing of Bridges: Proof Load Testing and the Future of Load Testing, focuses first on proof load testing of bridges. It discusses the specific aspects of proof load testing during the preparation, execution, and post-processing of such a test (Part 1). The second part covers the testing of buildings. The third part discusses novel ideas regarding measurement techniques used for load testing. Methods using non-contact sensors, such as photography- and video-based measurement techniques are discussed. The fourth part discusses load testing in the framework of reliability-based decision-making and in the framework of a bridge management program. The final part of the book summarizes the knowledge presented across the two volumes, as well as the remaining open questions for research, and provides practical recommendations for engineers carrying out load tests. This work will be of interest to researchers and academics in the field of civil/structural engineering, practicing engineers and road authorities worldwide.

Synopsis Advances in Biosensors Vol.1, b/w by : Sergey Yurish

Every research and development in biosensors (as well as in any other research fields) is started from a state-of-the-art review. Such review is one of the most labor- and time-consuming parts of research, especially in high echnological areas as biosensors and chemical sensors. It is strongly necessary to take into account and reflect in the review the current stage of development, including existing sensing principles, methods of measurements, technologies and existing devices. Many PhD students and researchers working in the same area must make (and do it)the same type of work. A researcher must find appropriate references, to read it and make a critical analysis to determine what was done well before and what was not solved till now, and determine and formulate his future scientific aim and objectives. To help researchers save time and taxpayers money, we have started to publish 'Advances in Biosensors: Reviews' Book Series. The 1st volume contains 7 chapters written by 14 authors from 9 countries.

Synopsis Handbook of Humidity Measurement, Volume 3 by : Ghenadii Korotcenkov

Because of unique water properties, humidity affects materials and many living organisms, including humans. Humidity control is important in various fields, from production management to creating a comfortable living environment. The range of materials that can be used in the development of humidity sensors is very broad, and the third volume of the Handbook of Humidity Measurement offers an analysis on various humidity-sensitive materials and sensor technologies used in the fabrication of humidity sensors and methods acceptable for their testing. Additional features include:  numerous strategies for the fabrication and characterization of humidity-sensitive materials and sensing structures used in sensor applications,  methods and properties to develop smaller, cheaper, more robust, and accurate devices with better sensitivity and stability,  a guide to sensor selection and an overview of the humidity sensor market, and  new technology solutions for integration, miniaturization, and specificity of the humidity sensor calibration. Handbook of Humidity Measurement, Volume 3: Sensing Materials and Technologies provides valuable information for practicing engineers, measurement experts, laboratory technicians, project managers in industries and national laboratories, and university students and professors interested in solutions to humidity measurement tasks. Despite the fact that this book is devoted to the humidity sensors, it can be used as a basis for understanding fundamentals of any gas sensor operation and development.

Synopsis Sensor Technology for Smart Homes by : Juan Ye

This Special Issue presents the recent advances in sensor technologies for smart homes, including fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors for detecting the presence and number of occupants, the Internet of things for monitoring CO2 concentration, and designing a novel eye-tracking system for monitoring and controlling a smart home, and infrared thermal sensors for fall detection. Such new explorations are pushing the boundary of sensing technologies and, thus, will have more profound implications for the future smart home. Advanced machine learning and data mining algorithms have been proposed to address sensor failure, appliance identification, and human activity recognition in a home environment. These results will enable a promising, sustainable deployment of sensing technologies. A novel multi-agent gamification system is proposed for managing tasks between household members and between families, which demonstrate another dimension of future smart home application. This Special Issue concludes with a review on sensors for human activity recognition. This work paves the roadmap for deploying smart home systems in different socioeconomic contexts. The whole Special Issue has significantly helped to shape our understanding of the strength, implications, and barriers of deploying long-term, sustainable, sensor technologies for smart homes.
