Synopsis Spiritual Care Basics and Beyond by : Joel Hempel
This book is a practical guide for any lay or professional minister or seminarian who wants to become more competent in providing spiritual (pastoral) care within a congregation or institutional setting. Through the use of personal stories, spiritual care theory, Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) methodology, and his experience as an educator and practitioner, Joel Hempel offers concrete ways to be helpful to those we serve. The book is rich in empowerment, grace, and encouragement, with a hefty dose of challenge. It will provide practical advice on how to handle real-life problems that a spiritual caregiver will encounter. The reader will also be invited to identify his or her healed and unhealed psychological and emotional wounds that impact ministry, and to clarify their living faith, which undergirds spiritual care. Spiritual Care Basics and Beyond also addresses important questions such as: What is spiritual care, and who needs it? How does a minister assess what the other person needs? What do you do when you get in over your head or mess up? What about sensitive subjects such as confrontation and boundaries? And the most important question: How do you grow in trusting the guidance of the Holy Spirit?

Synopsis Hearing Beyond the Words by : Emma J. Justes
Only when pastors hear beyond the words, can they care-fully minister. Pastors listen all the time. Or do they? Listening is more than a developed skill; it is an awesome gift of hospitality offered to others. According to Dr. Emma Justes, hearing beyond the words signifies an intimate relationship characterized by humility, thoughtful availability, vulnerability, and mutuality. Listening requires focused attention and openness. To help the reader learn this essential skill, the author includes exercises at the end of each chapter to build needed competency for this healing ministry.

Synopsis Reframing Your Ministry by : Anthony J. Headley
How does a pastor stay afloat amid the multiple demands of ministry? Dr. Headley says too many ministers experience lives that resemble firefighters in a California wildfire. In his fresh, interesting style, he contends that our definition of ministry needs to be revamped--in his words, reframed. Drawing from the lives of Moses and Jesus, Headley presents a ministry model that helps the minister minimize stress, avoid burnout, and eliminate imbalance. Practical resource for starting well and finishing strong in ministry.

Synopsis Short Term Spiritual Guidance by : Duane R. Bidwell
This book represents a significant departure from most contemporary writing about spiritual direction. While most writers focus on long-term relationships of guidance, specifically envisioning long listening sessions, Bidwell changes focus. Spiritual direction, he insists, typically requires intervention in a specific crisis or situation or question, is not formal, lasts fewer than five sessions, and must be actively and intentionally focused on the person's growth. Bidwell's work shows what spiritual directors can learn from the short-term therapy model, especially about enabling people briefly but effectively to ''learn to listen on their own and with others for God's presence.'' Focusing on how God is already active in the directee's life allows the participants to identify God's action and respond in ways that collaborate with that identified movement of the Spirit.
