Synopsis Spectra by : Ashley Toliver

Precise, taut, minimalist poems are Toliver’s Yellow Wallpaper, using the thud and drone of language to evoke the suffocation of a marriage gone sour, sound bouncing back, and creating patterns that are an inhibiting force in themselves. There’s a pulse to her work, one that harnesses the energy on the page to transcend binaries and boundaries of the self.

Synopsis The Gates of Twilight by : Paula Volsky

In a fragile alliance, the natives are stirring uneasily under their foreign rulers. Rebellion is brewing, and at the heart of the conflict lies the bloody and powerful cult of the god Aoun, whose followers will stop at nothing to rid their land of alien domination. So civil servant Renille vo Chaumelle, scion of a proud, conquering line mingled with native blood, is conscripted as a spy and ordered to penetrate the fortress-temple known as the Fastness of the Gods. There he is to discover the secrets of the priests of Aoun and - if the chance presents itself - assassinate the lead priest, named in legend as the god's own son. But in the holiest depths of the temple, Renille finds there is more to the cult than his superiors suspect - far more than they will ever believe. What he learns leads him to the beautiful princess Jathondi, daughter of the native ruler, who is fated to be the crux of a violent confrontation between the fanatic followers of a flesh-hungry god and their arrogant overlords. Together, Jathondi and Renille must brave a whirlwind of revolution and apocalyptic magic that could shatter a nation, and open the long-sealed portal between heaven and earth.

Synopsis Spectra by : Leslie Allyn

Meet Spectra: a crafty, industrious, four-inch-tall artist with a brilliant approach to her art. The portraits she makes are composed from the seeds she collects from near and far, along with the creek mud that holds it all together. The results? Uncanny! But...something is missing. Simple seeds and monotone mud just don't capture the rich palette of the world around her-including her own skin, which changes hue according to her state of mind. She explores various ways to make her portraits pop, without much success. When busy friends aren't able to lend a hand, she's on her own, and soon finds herself caught in flooding rain that could ruin everything. But the unexpected journey that follows-and the bizarre new, not-quite-helpful creature she meets-just might offer a grand solution after all. Featuring original watercolor artwork by Leslie Allyn, this book is a colorful journey all its own. From the beginning, we see Spectra as a resourceful, independent and empowered girl. But there's always room to learn, and her journey teaches her a little about how to ask for help, how to handle frustration, what kindness can do for everyone, and an even broader truth about putting trust in nature and its mysterious methods. Spectra won't be quite the same by the end of her adventure, and that's precisely the point of having it.

Synopsis Spectra of Atoms and Molecules by : Peter F. Bernath

Spectra of Atoms and Molecules, 2nd Edition is designed to introduce advanced undergraduates and new graduate students to the vast field of spectroscopy. Of interest to chemists, physicists, astronomers, atmospheric scientists, and engineers, it emphasizes the fundamental principles of spectroscopy with its primary goal being to teach students how to interpret spectra. The book includes a clear presentation of group theory needed for understanding the material and a large number of excellent problems are found at the end of each chapter. In keeping with the visual aspects of the course, the author provides a large number of diagrams and spectra specifically recorded for this book. Topics such as molecular symmetry, matrix representation of groups, quantum mechanics, and group theory are discussed. Analyses are made of atomic, rotational, vibrational, and electronic spectra. Spectra of Atoms and Molecules, 2nd Edition has been updated to include the 1998 revision of physical constants, and conforms more closely to the recommended practice for the use of symbols and units. This new edition has also added material pertaining to line intensities, which can be confusing due to the dozens of different units used to report line and band strengths. Another major change is in author Peter Bernath's discussion of the Raman effect and light scattering, where the standard theoretical treatment is now included. Aimed at new students of spectroscopy regardless of their background, Spectra of Atoms and Molecules will help demystify spectroscopy by showing the necessary steps in a derivation.

Synopsis Organic Structures from Spectra by : L. D. Field

Organic Structures from Spectra, Fourth Edition consists of a carefully selected set of over 300 structural problems involving the use of all the major spectroscopic techniques. The problems are graded to develop and consolidate the student’s understanding of Organic Spectroscopy, with the accompanying text outlining the basic theoretical aspects of major spectroscopic techniques at a level sufficient to tackle the problems. Specific changes for the new edition will include A significantly expanded section on 2D NMR spectroscopy focusing on COSY, NOESY and CH-Correlation Incorporating new material into some tables to provide extra characteristic data for various classes of compounds Additional basic information on how to solve spectroscopic problems Providing new problems within the area of 10 2D NMR spectroscopy More problems at the ‘simpler’ end of the range As with previous editions, this book combines basic theory, practical advice and sensible approaches to solving spectra problems. It will therefore continue to prove invaluable to students studying organic spectroscopy across a range of disciplines.

Synopsis Infrared Spectra of Inorganic Dielectric Solids by : Johannes N. Plendl

The lattice vibration spectrum of a solid has recently been characterized by one single frequency, which is defined as the frequency of the center of gravity of the spectrum, called 'centro-frequency.' Here the experimental determination of this frequency is shown in detail for a number of solids, the vibrational spectra of which became available recently. Emphasis is given to spectral data at various temperatures, from 4K to about 1000K, and at the various major crystallographic directions. The 'centro-frequencies' at room temperature and higher temperatures show almost no change; whereas, at low temperature the 'centrofrequencies' consistently show a very definite increase. The result reveals a definite increase in binding energy with temperature decrease. A considerably higher resolution, particularly in the broad band areas, was obtained with spectra at very low temperatures. (Author).

Synopsis Interpretation of Organic Spectra by : Yong-Cheng Ning

Although there are a number of books in this field, most of them lack an introduction of comprehensive analysis of MS and IR spectra, and others do not provide up-to-date information like tandem MS. This book fills the gap. The merit of this book is that the author will not only introduce knowledge for analyzing nuclear magnetic resonance spectra including 1H spectra (Chapter 1), 13C spectra (Chapter 2) and 2D NMR spectra (Chapter 3), he also arms readers systemically with knowledge of Mass spectra (including EI MS spectra and MS spectra by using soft ionizations) (Chapter 4) and IR spectra (Chapter 5). In each chapter the author presents very practical application skills by providing various challenging examples. The last chapter (Chapter 6) provides the strategy, skills and methods on how to identify an unknown compound through a combination of spectra. Based on nearly 40 years researching and teaching experience, the author also proposes some original and creative ideas, which are very practical for spectral interpretation.
