On Oman’s long southeastern coastline lies the port city of Duqm. The port directly faces the waters of the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean beyond that. Given Duqm’s strategic location, the authorities are hoping it will serve as a safe-haven for oceangoing vessels to refuel, make emergency stops, and carry out maintenance operations—to say nothing of the port’s potential to create a hub-and-spoke maritime logistics system. This 20-page special report, supported by the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ), features interviews with Duqm's top movers and shakers, as well as news and analysis.

"The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic marks the most significant, singular global disruption since World War II, with health, economic, political, and security implications that will ripple for years to come." -Global Trends 2040 (2021) Global Trends 2040-A More Contested World (2021), released by the US National Intelligence Council, is the latest report in its series of reports starting in 1997 about megatrends and the world's future. This report, strongly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, paints a bleak picture of the future and describes a contested, fragmented and turbulent world. It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.

Oman is a country located in the Middle East, on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It is a small country, with a population of around 5 million people. Oman has a rich history and culture, with evidence of human settlement dating back to 10,000 BC. Its strategic location made Oman an important center for trade and commerce in the ancient world, with its ports serving as crucial stopovers for traders traveling between Asia, Africa and Europe. Today, Oman is a modern and prosperous country, with a thriving economy based largely on oil production, tourism and commerce. It is known for its stunning landscapes, including rugged mountains, golden deserts, and picturesque coastlines, as well as its diverse and hospitable people. Despite its modernization and progress, Oman remains deeply rooted in its traditions and history, making it a unique and fascinating destination for travelers and scholars alike.

This is a book about the modernization of public governance and the development of strategic states. It focuses on six Gulf countries (United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait) and presents research findings from quantitative data analysis and comparative analysis of the trends and developments of the six Gulf states. The book analyses the workings of the governments of the Gulf States, including the way that they have tackled national development since the mid 1990s. This includes how their strategies for economic diversification have been reflected in trends in revenues from "oil rents" and whether they are still rentier states or not. Evidence is presented on key topics such as government strategies and long-term strategic visions. Careful consideration is given to reputational evidence and to the strategic process capabilities of the governments: integration and coordination of government machinery, mobilizing public and private stakeholders, evaluating, and adapting – all defined as strategic process capabilities. This examination of government is also used to study their performance in strategic results areas: the economy, the natural environment, and the happiness of their citizens. The countries emerge from this analysis as far from identical in terms of capabilities or in term of performance.
