Synopsis Sketch of the History of Protestant Missions in China (Classic Reprint) by : David Willard Lyon

Excerpt from Sketch of the History of Protestant Missions in China China was the first war with England. Through her merchants, Great Britain was sending to China in vast quantities the vile drug, opium. Some of Chi na's keenest and most farssighted statesmen saw clearly that opium meant the min of that great nation. Consequently, with true patriotism, they bent their energies upon the work of prohibiting its importation. In desperation large cargoes of the drug were siezed and thrown overboard. England, incensed at this act, which on the part of the Chinese was merely in selfsdefense, opened a war in 1839 to force China to legalize the iniquitous trafic. Much blood was shed, and England came forth victorious. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis The Cross and the Dragon Or the Fortunes of Christianity in China by : John Kesson

Excerpt from The Cross and the Dragon or the Fortunes of Christianity in China: With Notices of the Christian Missions and Missionaries, and Some Account of the Chinese Secret Societies In saying this much, the writer is far from wishing to depreciate the value of Christian missions in China, or to discourage their sup porters. It will be found that he has done full justice to the valiant and honourable men, both Catholic and Protestant, who have gone forth as labourers in this vineyard. But too much imme diate gain must not be expected from their labours. Ripe clusters must not be expected where the buds have scarcely made their appearance. The works of Deity are of slow growth.
