Synopsis Sexuality and the Rise of China by : Travis S. K. Kong

In Sexuality and the Rise of China Travis S. K. Kong examines the changing meanings of same-sex identities, communities, and cultures for young Chinese gay men in contemporary Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland China. Drawing on ninety life stories, Kong’s transnational queer sociological approach shows the complex interplay between personal biography and the dramatically changing social institutions in these three societies. Kong conceptualizes coming out as relational politics and the queer/tongzhi community and commons as an affective, imaginative means of connecting, governed by homonormative masculinity. He shows how monogamy is a form of cruel optimism and envisions state and sexuality intertwining in different versions of homonationalism in each location. Tracing the alternately diverging and converging paths of being young, "Chinese," gay, and male, Kong reveals how both Western and emerging inter- and intra- Asian queer cultures shape queer/tongzhi experiences. Most significantly, at this historical juncture characterized by the rise of China, Kong criticizes the globalization of sexuality by emphasizing inter-Asia modeling, referencing, and solidarities and debunks the essentializing myth of Chineseness, thereby decolonizing Western sexual knowledge and demonstrating the differential meanings of Chineseness/queerness across the Sinophone world.

Synopsis Sexuality in China by : Howard Chiang

What was sex like in China, from imperial times through the post-Mao era? The answer depends, of course, on who was having sex, where they were located in time and place, and what kind of familial, social, and political structures they participated in. This collection offers a variety of perspectives by addressing diverse topics such as polygamy, pornography, free love, eugenics, sexology, crimes of passion, homosexuality, intersexuality, transsexuality, masculine anxiety, sex work, and HIV/AIDS. Following a loose chronological sequence, the chapters examine revealing historical moments in which human desire and power dynamics came into play. Collectively, the contributors undertake a necessary historiographic intervention by reconsidering Western categorizations and exploring Chinese understandings of sexuality and erotic orientation.

Synopsis Chinese Male Homosexualities by : Travis Kong

This book presents a groundbreaking exploration of masculinities and homosexualities amongst Chinese gay men. It provides a sociological account of masculinity, desire, sexuality, identity and citizenship in contemporary Chinese societies, and within the constellation of global culture. Kong reports the results of an extensive ethnographic study of contemporary Chinese gay men in a wide range of different locations including mainland China, Hong Kong and the Chinese overseas community in London, showing how Chinese gay men live their everyday lives. Relating Chinese male homosexuality to the extensive social and cultural theories on gender, sexuality and the body, postcolonialism and globalisation, the book examines the idea of queer space and numerous 'queer flows' – of capital, bodies, ideas, images, and commodities – around the world. The book concludes that different gay male identities – such as the conspicuously consuming memba in Hong Kong, the urban tongzhi, the 'money boy' in China and the feminised 'golden boy' in London – emerge in different locations, and are all caught up in the transnational flow of queer cultures which are at once local and global.

Synopsis Yin Rising the Chinese Sexual Evolution by : Fram Fisher

March 4, 2013 was the third trip to China, organized by The Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality, in San Francisco, California. The first two were “good will tours,” with no agenda other than establishing friendships and collegiate collaboration. The current tour was a culmination of over two decades of work and negotiations to establish a Sexuality Institute in mainland China, further validated by the first Sino-US Sexuality Conference, with experts (as you will see) from both sides who travelled half way across the world and from all areas of China and Taiwan to present. This extraordinary vision of global sexual health, was the brainchild of one man, Dr. Ted McIlvenna. As we travelled on the bus from one brand new city to yet another - brand new - amazing city, it occurred to Beverley and I that a memorial of this momentous occasion should be created. An invitation was made to all the presenters “on the bus” to write their memories, thoughts and feelings about what this trip had meant to them. Each individual's only mandate was to keep in mind that this was to concentrate on our experiences from the trip to China, allowing in that format for each person's individual contribution to the wider field of Sexology, to express themselves. The following pages hold the unedited contributions of those who wanted to be a part of this gift to Dr. Ted and the Institute. What you will read will add to the recognition of an unparalleled man, a wealth of insights, historical reflections on a mysterious country, and the 'coup de gras' is the topic: The Sexual Evolution of Women in China.

Synopsis Sexual Behavior in Modern China by : Dalin Liu

This is the first nationwide survey of sexual behavior in China, which, in the meantime, has been widely acclaimed as the "Chinese Kinsey Report." The report was planned and supervised by four sex researchers leading a team of 40 assistants and over 500 field workers over a 15-month period. They obtained over 20,000 completed questionnaires from all parts of China, northern and southern, rural and urban. The voluminous book caused a sensation not only in the People's Republic, but also in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. It provided a first glimpse of a hitherto hidden aspect of life in China. A groundbreaking survey -- nothing more or less than the Kinsey report of modern China. Sexual Behavior in Modern China: Report on the Nationwide Survey of 20,000 Men and Women.

Synopsis The Culture of Sex in Ancient China by : Paul R. Goldin

The subject of sex was central to early Chinese thought. Discussed openly and seriously as a fundamental topic of human speculation, it was an important source of imagery and terminology that informed the classical Chinese conception of social and political relationships. This sophisticated and long-standing tradition, however, has been all but neglected by modern historians. In The Culture of Sex in Ancient China, Paul Rakita Goldin addresses central issues in the history of Chinese attitudes toward sex and gender from 500 B.C. to A.D. 400. A survey of major pre-imperial sources, including some of the most revered and influential texts in the Chinese tradition, reveals the use of the image of copulation as a metaphor for various human relations, such as those between a worshiper and his or her deity or a ruler and his subjects. In his examination of early Confucian views of women, Goldin notes that, while contradictions and ambiguities existed in the articulation of these views, women were nevertheless regarded as full participants in the Confucian project of self-transformation. He goes on to show how assumptions concerning the relationship of sexual behavior to political activity (assumptions reinforced by the habitual use of various literary tropes discussed earlier in the book) led to increasing attempts to regulate sexual behavior throughout the Han dynasty. Following the fall of the Han, this ideology was rejected by the aristocracy, who continually resisted claims of sovereignty made by impotent emperors in a succession of short-lived dynasties. Erudite and immensely entertaining, this study of intellectual conceptions of sex and sexuality in China will be welcomed by students and scholars of early China and by those with an interest in the comparative development of ancient cultures.

Synopsis Sex, Culture, and Modernity in China by : Frank Dikötter

With the disintegration of Confucian cosmology after the fall of the imperial system in China, medical science was introduced as an epistemological foundation for social order. The construction of sexuality as a dangerous drive which was thought to form the very core of the individual led to the emergence of a wide range of identities like the menstruating girl, the hysterical housewife, the masturbating adolescent and the syphilitic husband. The naturalization of desire also introduced a tension between the sexual responsibilities of the individual and the coercive intervention of civil society in the name of the collective health of future generations. Although new categories of analysis, such as 'population', 'race', 'sex', 'woman' and 'youth' were introduced to early Republican China from abroad, their reception and adaptation were founded on cultural reorientations which may have taken place as long before as the 17th and 18th centuries. Instead of describing the rise of normative naturalism as a derivative discourse from 'the West', this book recognizes that the roots of modernizing representations may have had to be sought in a rich and diverse past in China itself. The author's analysis is based on medical and lay texts such as handbooks, marriage guides and introductions to physiology and sexual hygiene. The epilogue demonstrates how the sexual identities invented early this century are still in place in China today.
