The Handbook of Venous Disorders, first published in 1996, is a handbook for all clinicians and surgeons who are involved with the investigation, evaluation, or management of venous and lymphatic diseases or malformations. These disorders include varicose veins, venous ulcers, DVT, lymphedema, and pulmonary embolism, as well as damage to the veins through trauma or tumor growth. This book illustrates applications of mathematics to various processes (physiological or artificial) involving flowing blood, including hemorheology, microcirculation, coagulation, kidney filtration and dialysis, offering a historical overview of each topic. Mathematical models are used to simulate processes normally occurring in flowing blood and to predict the effects of dysfunctions (e.g. bleeding disorders, renal failure), as well as the effects of therapies with an eye to improving treatments. In early modern England, housewives, clergymen, bloodletters, herb women, and patients told authoritative tales about the body. By the end of the eighteenth century, however, medicine had begun to drown out these voices.
