Songhay bards study history by "eating the words of the ancestors," and sorcerers learn their art by ingesting particular substances, by testing their flesh with knives, by mastering pain and illness. In Sensuous Scholarship Paul Stoller challenges contemporary social theorists and cultural critics who—using the notion of embodiment to critique Eurocentric and phallocentric predispositions in scholarly thought—consider the body primarily as a text that can be read and analyzed. Stoller argues that this attitude is in itself Eurocentric and is particularly inappropriate for anthropologists, who often work in societies in which the notion of text, and textual interpretation, is foreign. "Erotic Resistance is an act of memory preservation regarding San Francisco's foundational role in the erotic entertainment and sex industries of the United States. It highlights the contributions of women of color, queer women, and trans women who were instrumental at key moments in the city's history concerning labor as well as the LGBT and sex workers' rights movements. In the 1960s, topless entertainment became legal in San Francisco for the first time in US history, although cross-dressing continued to be criminalized. In yet another first instance in US history, San Francisco activist-strippers, who were also artists, led successful class action lawsuits and efforts to unionize in the strip club industry in the 1990s. Using diverse methods, including ethnography, visual and performance analysis, and historiography, Erotic Resistance relates these phenomena through archival materials, artworks, and original interviews with women who performed in San Francisco's burlesque scene and strip club industry during these time periods"--

Despite the fact that the sea covers 70 per cent of the Earth’s surface, and is integral to the workings of the world, it has been largely neglected or perceived as marginal in modern consciousness. This edited collection disrupts notions of the sea as ’other’, as foreign and featureless, through specific, situated accounts which highlight the centrality of the sea for the individuals concerned. Bringing together academics who combine scholarly expertise with lived experiences on, in and with the sea, it examines humans’ relationships with the sea. Through the use of auto-ethnographic accounting, the contributors reflect on how the sea has shaped their sense of identity, belonging and connection. They examine what it is to be engaged with the sea, and narrate their lived, sentient, corporeal experiences. The sea is a cultural seascape just as it is physical reality. The sea shapes us and we, in turn, attempt to ’shape it’ as we construct various versions of it that reflect our on-going and mutable relationship with it. The use of embodied accounts, as a way of conveying lived-experiences, and the integration of relevant theoretical frames for understanding the broader cultural implications provide new opportunities to understand seascapes.
