Synopsis Semigroups of Linear Operators and Applications to Partial Differential Equations by : Amnon Pazy
Since the characterization of generators of C0 semigroups was established in the 1940s, semigroups of linear operators and its neighboring areas have developed into an abstract theory that has become a necessary discipline in functional analysis and differential equations. This book presents that theory and its basic applications, and the last two chapters give a connected account of the applications to partial differential equations.

Synopsis Theory of Semigroups and Applications by : Kalyan B. Sinha
The book presents major topics in semigroups, such as operator theory, partial differential equations, harmonic analysis, probability and statistics and classical and quantum mechanics, and applications. Along with a systematic development of the subject, the book emphasises on the explorations of the contact areas and interfaces, supported by the presentations of explicit computations, wherever feasible. Designed into seven chapters and three appendixes, the book targets to the graduate and senior undergraduate students of mathematics, as well as researchers in the respective areas. The book envisages the pre-requisites of a good understanding of real analysis with elements of the theory of measures and integration, and a first course in functional analysis and in the theory of operators. Chapters 4 through 6 contain advanced topics, which have many interesting applications such as the Feynman–Kac formula, the central limit theorem and the construction of Markov semigroups. Many examples have been given in each chapter, partly to initiate and motivate the theory developed and partly to underscore the applications. The choice of topics in this vastly developed book is a difficult one, and the authors have made an effort to stay closer to applications instead of bringing in too many abstract concepts.

Synopsis Semigroups of Operators: Theory and Applications by : A.V. Balakrishnan
These Proceedings comprise the bulk of the papers presented at the Inter national Conference on Semigroups of Opemtors: Theory and Contro~ held 14-18 December 1998, Newport Beach, California, U.S.A. The intent of the Conference was to highlight recent advances in the the ory of Semigroups of Operators which provides the abstract framework for the time-domain solutions of time-invariant boundary-value/initial-value problems of partial differential equations. There is of course a firewall between the ab stract theory and the applications and one of the Conference aims was to bring together both in the hope that it may be of value to both communities. In these days when all scientific activity is judged by its value on "dot com" it is not surprising that mathematical analysis that holds no promise of an immediate commercial product-line, or even a software tool-box, is not high in research priority. We are particularly pleased therefore that the National Science Foundation provided generous financial support without which this Conference would have been impossible to organize. Our special thanks to Dr. Kishan Baheti, Program Manager.

Synopsis Semi-Groups of Operators and Approximation by : Paul Leo Butzer
In recent years important progress has been made in the study of semi-groups of operators from the viewpoint of approximation theory. These advances have primarily been achieved by introducing the theory of intermediate spaces. The applications of the theory not only permit integration of a series of diverse questions from many domains of mathematical analysis but also lead to significant new results on classical approximation theory, on the initial and boundary behavior of solutions of partial differential equations, and on the theory of singular integrals. The aim of this book is to present a systematic treatment of semi groups of bounded linear operators on Banach spaces and their connec tions with approximation theoretical questions in a more classical setting as well as within the setting of the theory of intermediate spaces. However, no attempt is made to present an exhaustive account of the theory of semi-groups of operators per se, which is the central theme of the monumental treatise by HILLE and PHILLIPS (1957). Neither has it been attempted to give an account of the theory of approximation as such. A number of excellent books on various aspects of the latter theory has appeared in recent years, so for example CHENEY (1966), DAVIS (1963), LORENTZ (1966), MEINARDUS (1964), RICE (1964), SARD (1963). By contrast, the present book is primarily concerned with those aspects of semi-group theory that are connected in some way or other with approximation.

Synopsis Stability of Operators and Operator Semigroups by : Tanja Eisner
The asymptotic behaviour, in particular "stability" in some sense, is studied systematically for discrete and for continuous linear dynamical systems on Banach spaces. Of particular concern is convergence to an equilibrium with respect to various topologies. Parallels and differences between the discrete and the continuous situation are emphasised.

Synopsis Semigroups of Operators - Theory and Applications by : Jacek Banasiak
This book features selected and peer-reviewed lectures presented at the 3rd Semigroups of Operators: Theory and Applications Conference, held in Kazimierz Dolny, Poland, in October 2018 to mark the 85th birthday of Jan Kisyński. Held every five years, the conference offers a forum for mathematicians using semigroup theory to discover what is happening outside their particular field of research and helps establish new links between various sub-disciplines of semigroup theory, stochastic processes, differential equations and the applied fields. The book is intended for researchers, postgraduate and senior students working in operator theory, partial differential equations, probability and stochastic processes, analytical methods in biology and other natural sciences, optimisation and optimal control. The theory of semigroups of operators is a well-developed branch of functional analysis. Its foundations were laid at the beginning of the 20th century, while Hille and Yosida's fundamental generation theorem dates back to the forties. The theory was originally designed as a universal language for partial differential equations and stochastic processes but, at the same time, it started to become an independent branch of operator theory. Today, it still has the same distinctive character: it develops rapidly by posing new 'internal' questions and, in answering them, discovering new methods that can be used in applications. On the other hand, it is being influenced by questions from PDE's and stochastic processes as well as from applied sciences such as mathematical biology and optimal control and, as a result, it continually gathers new momentum. However, many results, both from semigroup theory itself and the applied sciences, are phrased in discipline-specific languages and are hardly known to the broader community.

Synopsis Positive Operator Semigroups by : András Bátkai
This book gives a gentle but up-to-date introduction into the theory of operator semigroups (or linear dynamical systems), which can be used with great success to describe the dynamics of complicated phenomena arising in many applications. Positivity is a property which naturally appears in physical, chemical, biological or economic processes. It adds a beautiful and far reaching mathematical structure to the dynamical systems and operators describing these processes. In the first part, the finite dimensional theory in a coordinate-free way is developed, which is difficult to find in literature. This is a good opportunity to present the main ideas of the Perron-Frobenius theory in a way which can be used in the infinite dimensional situation. Applications to graph matrices, age structured population models and economic models are discussed. The infinite dimensional theory of positive operator semigroups with their spectral and asymptotic theory is developed in the second part. Recent applications illustrate the theory, like population equations, neutron transport theory, delay equations or flows in networks. Each chapter is accompanied by a large set of exercises. An up-to-date bibliography and a detailed subject index help the interested reader. The book is intended primarily for graduate and master students. The finite dimensional part, however, can be followed by an advanced bachelor with a solid knowledge of linear algebra and calculus.
