Synopsis Selected Sermons, Volume 3 by : Saint Peter Chrysologus
This volume is the third in the Fathers of the Church series to make available selected sermons of St. Peter Chrysologus (ca. 406-50), Archbishop of Ravenna and Doctor of the Church. With its publication, all of the authentic sermons of Chrysologus are now available in English. A gifted homilist, Chrysologus manifested great reverence for the Scriptures as divine communication and made them accessible to his congregation. Making use of imagery drawn from Ravenna's natural surroundings as well as from some of the professions occupied by members of his flock, Chrysologus explained orthodox doctrine and promoted spiritual development. The Gospels occupy the foreground in most of his sermons, yet Chrysologus allows the reader a glimpse of the daily life, religious debates, political milieu, and Christian belief and practice in mid-fifth-century Ravenna. In this volume are several expositions of St. Paul's letters and some sermons delivered on the feast days of saints and at the consecrations of new bishops. Most of the selections, however, are homilies on texts from the four Gospels that Chrysologus interpreted throughout the year. Of particular note is his preaching on specific liturgical seasons--the end of Lent, Easter, Pentecost, the period immediately prior to Christmas, and the Christmas and Epiphany cycle. ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR William B. Palardy is Professor of Patristics at St. John's Seminary School of Theology in Brighton, Massachusetts. PRAISE FOR THE BOOK "This volume represents all of Chrysologus's sermons now available in the English language. . . . Throughout this volume Palardy provides the reader with first rate insight . . . making this final collection of sermons by Chrysologus truly an important addition to the study of Patristics." -- Jonathan Ignatius von Kodar, Laval Theologique et Philosophique

Synopsis The Collected Sermons of Walter Brueggemann by : Walter Brueggemann
In addition to being one of the world's leading interpreters of the Old Testament, Walter Brueggemann is a skilled and beloved preacher. This collection of sermons demonstrates Brueggemann's fidelity to biblical texts, which come alive with meaning in our contemporary world. Throughout, Brueggemann reflects on his preaching. As Samuel Wells writes in his foreword, "Enjoy this volume from a master exegete, a master theologian, and a master preacher. They really are neat sermons. And they're for you."

Synopsis Sermons Volume 3 by : Frederick William Robertson
This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1907 edition. Excerpt: ...when He was in one place He was not in another. His body was sustained by the ordinary aliments: broiled fish and honeycomb. The prints of suffering were on Him. His recognitions were human still. Thomas and Peter were especially reminded of incidents before His death, and connected with His living interests. To Thomas--" Reach hither thy hand." To Peter--"Lovest thou me?" And this typifies to us a very grand and important truth. It is this, if I may venture so to express myself--the truth of the Human Heart of God. We think of God as a Spirit, infinitely removed from and unlike the creatures He has made. But the truth is, man resembles God: --all spirits, all minds are of the same family. The Father bears a likeness to the Son whom He has created. The mind of God is similar to the mind of man. Love does not mean one thing in man, and another thing in God. Holiness, Justice, Pity, Tenderness--these are in the Eternal the same in kind which they are in the Finite Being. The present Manhood of Christ conveys this deeply important truth, that the Divine Heart is human in its sympathies. The third observation upon these verses is, that there is a connexion between what Jesus was and what Jesus is. He can be touched now, because He was tempted then. The incidents and the feelings of that part of the existence which is gone have not passed away without results which are deeply entwined with His present being. His past experience has left certain effects durable in His nature as it is now. It has endued Him with certain qualifications and certain susceptibilities, which He would not have had but for that experience. Just as the results remained upon His body, the prints of the nails in His palms, and the spear-gash in His...

Synopsis Martin Luther's Ninety-Five Theses and Selected Sermons by : Martin Luther
Martin Luther's Ninety-Five Theses forever changed the world. This is one of Christianity's most important documents. It was not as most people assume Luther's explanation as to why he was separating from the Catholic Church but it was a shot across the bow of a corrupt system that eventually lead to the Reformation. Also included in this edition are seven of Luther's most important sermons
