Synopsis Selected Papers of J. M. Burgers by : F.T. Nieuwstadt
J.M. Burgers (1895--1981) is regarded as one of the leading scientists in the field of fluid mechanics, contributing many important results, a number of which still bear his name. However, the work of this outstanding scientist was mostly published in the Proceedings and Transactions of The Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences, of which he was a distinguished member. Nowadays, this work is almost impossible to obtain through the usual library channels. Therefore, the editors have decided to reissue the most important work of J.M. Burgers, which gives the reader access to the original papers which led to important results, now known as the Burgers Equation, the Burgers Vector and the Burgers Vortex. Further, the book contains a biography of J.M. Burgers, which provides the reader with both information on his scientific life, as well as a rounded impression of the many activities which J.M. Burgers performed or was involved in outside his science.

Synopsis Selected Papers of Morikazu Toda by : Morikazu Toda
This volume contains selected papers of Dr Morikazu Toda. The papers are arranged in chronological order of publishing dates. Among Dr Toda's many contributions, his works on liquids and nonlinear lattice dynamics should be mentioned. The one-dimensional lattice where nearest neighboring particles interact through an exponential potential is called the Toda lattice which is a miracle and indeed a jewel in theoretical physics. The papers in this volume can be grouped into five subjects: statistical mechanics, theory of liquids and solutions, lattice dynamics, Toda lattice and soliton theory and its applications.

Synopsis Selected Papers By Chia-shun Yih (In 2 Volumes) by : W M Lai
The volume represents a lifetime's work of the author, for many years the Stephen P Timoshenko Distinguished University Professor of Fluid Mechanics of the University of Michigan. The papers selected treat the dynamics of stratified or rotating fluids, internal or surface waves, hydrodynamic stability, jets and plumes, flow in porous media, and certain aspects of hydrodynamics in magnetic or electric fields. When the papers are viewed in perspective, heterogeneity, whether in density, entropy, circulation, viscosity, or in some quantity which can be called magnetic circulation, seems to be a recurring theme in the phenomena investigated. It provides a general framework through which the understanding of the various phenomena is facilitated by the satisfying similarity underlying their seeming diversity.

Synopsis Selected Papers, Volume 3 by : S. Chandrasekhar
This is the third of six volumes collecting significant papers of the distinguished astrophysicist and Nobel laureate S. Chandrasekhar. His work is notable for its breadth as well as for its brilliance; his practice has been to change his focus from time to time to pursue new areas of research. The result has been a prolific career full of discoveries and insights, some of which are only now being fully appreciated. Chandrasekhar has selected papers that trace the development of his ideas and that present aspects of his work not fully covered in the books he has periodically published to summarize his research in each area. This volume is divided into four sections. The first, on dynamical friction and Brownian motion, includes papers written after Chandrasekhar published his 1942 monograph Principles of Stellar Dynamics. Also in this section is "Stochastic Problems in Physics and Astronomy," one of the most cited papers in the physics literature, as well as papers written jointly with John von Neumann that have been given impetus to recent research. As Chandrasekhar notes, the papers in the second section, on statistical problems in astronomy, were influenced by Ambartsumian's analysis of brightness in the Milky Way. A third section on the statistical theory of turbulence addresses issues still unresolved in fluid dynamics, and the last section is devoted to hydromagnetic problems in astrophysics that are not discussed in Chandrasekhar's monographs.

Synopsis The Equations of Materials by : Brian Cantor
This primer describes important equations of materials and the scientists who derived them. It provides an excellent introduction to the subject by making the material accessible and enjoyable. The book is dedicated to a number of propositions: 1. The most important equations are often simple and easily explained; 2. The most important equations are often experimental, confirmed time and again; 3. The most important equations have been derived by remarkable scientists who lived interesting lives. Each chapter covers a single equation and materials subject, and is structured in three sections: first, a description of the equation itself; second, a short biography of the scientist after whom it is named; and third, a discussion of some of the ramifications and applications of the equation. The biographical sections intertwine the personal and professional life of the scientist with contemporary political and scientific developments. Topics included are: Bravais lattices and crystals; Bragg's law and diffraction; the Gibbs phase rule and phases; Boltzmann's equation and thermodynamics; the Arrhenius equation and reactions; the Gibbs-Thomson equation and surfaces; Fick's laws and diffusion; the Scheil equation and solidification; the Avrami equation and phase transformations; Hooke's law and elasticity; the Burgers vector and plasticity; Griffith's equation and fracture; and the Fermi level and electrical properties. The book is written for students interested in the manufacture, structure, properties and engineering application of materials such as metals, polymers, ceramics, semiconductors and composites. It requires only a working knowledge of school maths, mainly algebra and simple calculus.

Synopsis Introduction to Symmetry Analysis by : Brian J. Cantwell
Symmetry analysis based on Lie group theory is the most important method for solving nonlinear problems aside from numerical computation. The method can be used to find the symmetries of almost any system of differential equations and the knowledge of these symmetries can be used to reduce the complexity of physical problems governed by the equations. This is a broad, self-contained, introduction to the basics of symmetry analysis for first and second year graduate students in science, engineering and applied mathematics. Mathematica-based software for finding the Lie point symmetries and Lie-Bäcklund symmetries of differential equations is included on a CD along with more than forty sample notebooks illustrating applications ranging from simple, low order, ordinary differential equations to complex systems of partial differential equations. MathReader 4.0 is included to let the user read the sample notebooks and follow the procedure used to find symmetries.
