The act of bearing witness can reveal much, but what about the figure of the witness itself? As contemporary culture is increasingly dominated by surveillance, the witness--whether artist, historian, scientist, government official, or ordinary citizen--has become empowered in realms from art to politics. In Seeing Witness, Jane Blocker challenges the implicit authority of witnessing through the examination of a series of contemporary artworks, all of which make the act of witnessing visible, open to inspection and critique.

For the last ten years Betsy Groves has been working with children traumatized by witnessing violence. In this book she shows how children understand, respond to, and are affected by violence, especially domestic violence. Groves makes the powerful case that traumatic events carried out by family members carry the most severe psychological risks for very young children. She uses clinical case studies to show that being young does not protect against the lasting effects of witnessing violence, and she offers ways adults can help.

The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1993, volume 2, contains messages given by Brother Witness Lee from May 28 through December 17, 1993. During the first eight months of 1993 Brother Lee was in Anaheim, California. At the beginning of September he visited Seattle, Washington, for one week, after which he returned to Anaheim and remained there until the end of the year. Only the outlines of the conference and the portions spoken by Brother Lee are included in The Collected Works of Witness Lee. 2. A message given in Anaheim, California, on May 28. This message is included in this volume as chapter 1 of the previous section entitled 1993 Blending Conference Messages concerning the Lord's Recovery and Our Present Need. Portions of this message were combined with other various writings by Brother Lee concerning the Triune God, and the compilation was previously published in a book entitled The Crucial Points of the Major Items of the Lord's Recovery Today. The contents of this book are included in this volume under the same title. 3. A message given in Anaheim, California, on July 3. Mechanical Witness is the first cultural and legal history charting the changing role and theoretical implications of film and video use as courtroom evidence. Schwartz moves from the earliest employment of film in the courts of the 1920s to the notious 1991 Rodney Kind video, revealing how the courts have developed a reliance on film and video technologies and contributed to the growing influence of visual media as a dominant mode of knowledge formation. At the same time, film and video in juridical contexts has developed a distinct theoretical legacy. The particular qualities of film as evidence both resonate with and contradict existing scholarship-focusing on economic, social, or aesthetic factors-which hitherto has defined film's status and cultural contribution. In the context of a trial, the possible meanings of a film change from its meanings when shown in a movie theater or broadcast on television, yet the public (and cinema scholars) tend to assume that the two are the same. Mechanical Witness demonstrates that we must understand evidentiary film and video's institutional specificity if we are to understand the full effects of motion picture technologies on our culture. This study sets the terms for a long overdue assessment of how the entertainment industry has shaped our film viewing practices, the place of moving picture evidence in the courtroom, and the social and cultural consequences of these intertwined histories.
