Synopsis Optical Fiber Sensor Technology by : L.S. Grattan

Environmental and chemical sensors in optical fiber sensor technology The nature of the environment in which we live and work, and the precarious state of many aspects of the natural environment, has been a major lesson for scientists over the last few decades. Public awareness of the issues involved is high, and often coupled with a scepticism of the ability of the scientist and engineer to provide an adequate, or even rapid solution to the preservation of the environment before further damage is done, and to achieve this with a mini mum of expenditure. Monitoring of the various aspects of the environment, whether it be external or internal to ourselves and involving chemical, physical or biomedical parameters is an essential process for the well-being of mankind and of the individual. Legis lative requirements set new standards for measurement and control all around us, which must be met by the most appropriate of the technologies available, commensurate with the costs involved. Optical fiber sensor technology has a major part to play in this process, both to complement existing technologies and to promote new solutions to difficult measurement issues. The developments in new sources and detectors covering wider ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum, with higher sensitivity, allow the use of techniques that some time ago would have been considered inappropriate or lacking in sufficient sensitivity.

Synopsis Scifi 93 - Proceedings Of The Scintillating Fiber Detectors by : Alan D Bross

These proceedings contain over 80 contributions from an international group of scientists and engineers actively working on applications of fiber technology in high energy physics and related fields. Sessions included reviews of past, current and possible future detectors incorporating fiber technology for tracking and calorimetry. Special sessions covered photodetection techniques, including VLPCs, APDs and hybrid phototubes; recent advances in fiber structure, optical interconnection and mechanical support; and scintillation materials, including new developments in scintillation dyes and studies of radiation and environmental effects.Technical advances have been rapid in this promising area of detector development, and the SciFi93 proceedings serve as a useful reference on the state of the art.

Synopsis Detector Research And Development For The Superconducting Super Collider - Proceedings Of The Symposium by : Valerie Kelly

Over the last three years a significant program of detector technology research and development for high luminosity, high energy hadron-hadron colliders has been underway in the United States, Japan and Europe. In as much as the first formal steps have been undertaken to initiate the experimental program at the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC), it is appropriate to assess in detail the status of this R&D effort. Results and Plans for Advanced Technology R&D for Particle Physics Detectors Appropriate for SSC Experiments are Presented. Specific Topics include: Calorimetry; Particle Tracking and Identification Techniques; Vertex-Detection; Magnets; Front-End Electronics; Data Acquisition Electronics; Techniques in Triggering; Data Transmission; Data Analysis and Simulation Software; Studies on Radiation Damage to Materials and Electronics.
