Synopsis Schull Dutch Skippers on the Lower Rhine from the 15th to the 18th Century by : Joachim Schüll

The author's Dutch ancestors were skippers/shipowners on the Lower Rhine river, presumably coming from the port city of Tiel on the river Waal. However, the bits of written information available about them did not provide much more than names and life records back to the year 1691. And earlier times were totally uncharted. Details about how these ancestors had mastered their life as skippers were unknown. The author wanted more than just to collect names and vital records, but to discover as many generations of skippers as possible and fill their history with lives. But how should he expand his knowledge about people who had no fixed address because they had been traveling on the Rhine between Dutch port cities and Cologne for many years? Fortunately, they already had a family name the author could look for! This was by no means a matter of course, as the research periods date back to the 15th century. This family name and the Internet were the keys to the successful search for clues.

Synopsis Liberation by : Bill McAndrew

Describes the Canadian's European war during the final eight months. First Canadian Army's role was to guard the Allied flank during the rapid advance from Normandy across France to Belgium and Holland. While not as glamorous as other phases of pursuit, the tasks of the Canadians were as brutally punishing as any. By the Spring of 1945, much of Holland had been liberated. All the while Canadian sailors fought bitter campaigns to clear European waters of German submarines and surface vessels.

Synopsis Steamboating on the Upper Mississippi, the Water Way to Iowa by : William John Petersen

Excerpt from Steamboating on the Upper Mississippi, the Water Way to Iowa: Some River History Thus, at the suggestion of Boutwell, the name Itasca was coined by Schoolcraft, by taking from the expression veritas caput the last four letters (itas) of the word veritas and combining them with the first two letters (ca) of the word caput which gives the new word Itasca. It may be added that the fanciful creation of new words or names by dividing two familiar words and com bining the parts as in the case of Itasca was not uncommon in the period of the Schoolcraft explorations. Synopsis The Insubordinate and the Noncompliant by : Howard Coombs

The Unwilling and the Reluctant: Theoretical Perspectives on Disobedience in the Military and The Apathetic and the Defiant: Case Studies of Canadian Mutiny and Disobedience, 1812-1919 are the first two volumes in a series devoted to disobedience issues in the Canadian military. Now with The Insubordinate and the Noncompliant, the trilogy is complete. Military leadership has both formal and informal dimensions. The formal leadership of any organization must ensure that it minimizes the divergence between institutional aims and the actions of informal leaders. When this separation occurs, the result is sometimes mutiny. These incidents of insubordination and noncompliance represent a form of dialogue between military personnel and their leadership. The Insubordinate and the Noncompliant offers a perspective on the Canadian experience with military mutiny in the twentieth century in an effort to provide relevant lessons for today.
