This volume contains the proceedings of the Fourth IFIP International Conference on Network Control and Engineering for QoS, Security and Mobility, NETCON 2005. The conference, organized by the International Federation for Information Processing, was held in Lannion, France from November 14-18, 2005. Coverage explores network security, network policy, quality of service, wireless networks, intelligent networks, and performance evaluation.

PAM 2004 was the 5th International Workshop on Passive and Active Measu- ment, heldinJuan-les-PinsontheFrenchRiviera, co-organizedbytheUniversity ofCambridgeandINRIA-SophiaAntipolis, with?nancialsupportfromInteland Cisco Systems. This year we received a record number of submissions (184), re?ecting the growth of the?eld and the critical role it plays in maintaining the network infrastructure on which we all rely. From the two-page abstracts submitted, the programme committee selected 29 papers whose authors were invited to submit full papers to appear in these proceedings. Particular emphasis was placed on selecting work that we felt was fresh and exciting, so as to encourage a dynamic and interactive workshop that provided a?rst public presentation of research that will go on to appear in other, more formal conferences and journals. The programme committee was greatly impressed with the strength and depth of submissions received, which bodes well for the future of the subject area. This workshop took place during April 19-20, 2004 in Juan-les-Pins. Located betweentheAlpsandtheMediterranean, andclosetoNice, CannesandMonaco, Juan-les-Pins is one of the most beautiful sites on the French Riviera. Juan-les- Pins is also close to Sophia Antipolis, the French telecom valley. The workshop could not have succeeded without the support of many people whom we would like thank. First, we thank the members of the programme c- mittee for donating a considerable amount of time to review the unexpectedly large number of submissions, while working to a very tight deadline.

Network Routing: Algorithms, Protocols, and Architectures, Second Edition, explores network routing and how it can be broadly categorized into Internet routing, circuit-switched routing, and telecommunication transport network routing. The book systematically considers these routing paradigms, as well as their interoperability, discussing how algorithms, protocols, analysis, and operational deployment impact these approaches and addressing both macro-state and micro-state in routing. This workshop on “Protocols for High-Speed Networks” is the seventh in a s- cessful series of international workshops, well known for their small and focused target audience, that provide a sound basis for intensive discussions of hi- qualityand timelyresearch work. The location of the workshop has alternated between Europe and the United States, at venues not onlyworth visiting for the workshop, but also for the distinct impressions theyleave on the participants. The ?rst workshop was held in 1989 in Zurich. Subsequentlythe workshop was moved to Palo Alto (1990), Stockholm (1993), Vancouver (1994), Sophia-Antipolis/Nice (1996), and Salem (1999). In 2002, the workshop was hosted in Berlin, the capital of Germany. PfHSN is a workshop providing an international forum that focuses on issues related to high-speed networking, such as protocols, implementation techniques, router design, network processors and the like. Although the topics have shifted during the last couple of years, for example, from parallel protocol implemen- tions to network processors, it could be observed that high speed remains a very important issue with respect to future networking. Traditionally, PfHSN is a r- ativelyfocused and small workshop with an audience of about 60 participants.

This thoroughly revised textbook provides a description of current networking technologies and protocols as well as important new tools for network performance analysis based on queuing theory. The third edition adds topics such as network virtualization and new related architectures, novel satellite systems (such as Space X, OneWeb), jitter and its impact on streaming services, packet level FEC techniques and network coding, new Markovian models, and advanced details on M/G/1 queuing models. The author also adds new selected exercises throughout the chapters and a new version of the slides and the solution manual. The book maintains its organization with networking technologies and protocols in Part I and then theory and exercises with applications to the different technologies and protocols in Part II. This book is intended as a textbook for master level courses in networking and telecommunications sectors.

WDM Networks and Systems, Network Planning and Management The demand for ever more capacity over the lucrative long-haul routes coupled with the need for higher reliability is pushing optical technology towards its limits. WDM systems allow upgrading of existing core networks and offer new opportunities for long-haul systems design towards ultimate terrabit systems. The prospect of an all-optical layer offers new possibilities for dynamic management of capacity and protection switching.
