Synopsis Rural Electrification by : Najib Altawell

Rural Electrification poses solutions to the insuperable modern challenge of providing 24/7 electricity for populations, housing and territory located outside towns and cities. The book reviews the historical development of rural energy systems, their status quo, and the role of renewable and fossil fueled solutions in delivering electricity. It addresses core issues of energy source typologies, resource deployment, fundamental challenges and limitations, the burgeoning threat of climate change, and the role of the renewable energy transition. Chapters account for almost all forms of fuel solutions, with a focus on electrification economics, planning, and policy using the most cost-effective fuels and systems available. Novel approaches to address the challenges of rural electrification, including distributed generation systems, new management and ownership models, off-grid systems, and future energy technologies are thoroughly explored. The work concludes with a comparative assessment of different energy supply technologies and scenarios, contrasting the pros and cons of fossil fuels versus renewable energy resources to achieve the goal of comprehensive rural electrification. - Provides a suite of new approaches to deliver and expand electrification across challenging rural environments - Describes optimal economics, planning and policy for electrification where there is no access to electricity - Reviews how practitioners can achieve cost reductions for rural energy supply using existing technologies - Addresses routes to power rural electrification within a transitioning energy economy while simultaneously accounting for climate change considerations

Synopsis Sustainable Energy And Environmental Technology - Proceedings Of The Asia-pacific Conference by : Aik Chong Lua

The countries in the Asia-Pacific region enjoy economic growth rates amongst the highest in the world today. It has transformed the nature of their industries and raised the living standards of the populace. The accelerated developments in these countries have, however, created severe demands on energy and the environment. This conference aimed to address issues related to energy and environmental protection in the quest for sustainble development. It will bring together participants from academia, industries and government agencies, from over 18 countries primarily in the Asia-Pacific region, and provide a forum for them to interact, share information, report research in progress and identify opportunities in the relevant fields.

Synopsis National Energy Plans in the Asia–Pacific Region by : Guy J. Pauker

National Energy Plans in the Asia-Pacific Region is a collection of papers presented at Workshop III of the Asia-Pacific Energy Studies Consultative Group, held in Honolulu, Hawaii, at the East-West Center, from 25-28 February 1980. The collection presents a framework for energy policies in the Asia-Pacific Region; energy policies of the United States, oil-exporting countries, industrial oil-importing countries, and countries importing more than and less than 50% of their oil requirements; and the role of international institutions in energy research. International energy policy makers and researchers will find the book invaluable.

Synopsis Mini Hydropower for Rural Development by : Thomas Meier

Rural electrification enjoys high priority on Indonesia's development agenda. In remote villages located beyond the reach of national electricity grids, mini hydropower offers an environmentally friendly alternative to decentralized electricity generation. Technical assistance programs have successfully introduced mini hydro technology in developing countries but have often failed to attain sustainable plant operation. This book provides insight into the multifaceted conditions under which village communities are struggling to keep systems running. A new approach linking productive electricity use and mini hydro operation is developed which incorporates experiences of market-oriented approaches in small enterprise development. Village communities are no longer left alone after the commissioning of the plants but are continuously provided need-oriented services. The study is exceptional in that the approach is experimentally applied in an actual project involving a village-owned coffee roastery. It is shown that the new approach not only contributes to a sustainable electricity supply but also to village development.

Synopsis Whole Energy System Dynamics by : Catalina Spataru

In order to address the twenty-first-century challenges of decarbonisation, energy security and cost-effectiveness it is essential to understand whole energy systems and the interconnection and interaction between different components. An integrated language is therefore needed to assist energy policymakers and to help industrial stakeholders assess future energy systems and infrastructure and make realistic technical and economic decisions. Whole Energy System Dynamics provides an interdisciplinary approach to whole energy systems; providing insights and understanding of it in the context of challenges, opportunities and solutions at different levels and time steps. It discusses approaches across disciplinary boundaries as well as existing issues within three main themes: theory, modelling and policy, and their interlinkage with geopolitics, markets and practice. Spataru argues that there is an urgent need for a whole energy system integration. This is necessary for effective analysis, design and control of the interactions and interdependencies involved in the technical, economic, regulatory and social dimensions of the energy system. This book is essential reading for students interested in the area of energy systems, policy and modelling. It is also a valuable read for policymakers, professionals, researchers, academics, engineers and industrial stakeholders.
