In this autobiographical, bi-cultural, and interdisciplinary production, I use piano, voice, dance, and acting to create a performance that weaves together Chinese and American cultural differences and similarities. The performance is an account of how I have learned to navigate the world as an academic and composer with the obstacles and successes that come with such a journey. I combine modern North American techniques with traditional Chinese ways of knowing through three art forms: theater, music, and dance. These very different musical traditions cooperate to connect performers and audiences. Chinese performers and audiences are reacquainted with their cultural roots, while U.S. audience members see something new in themselves as they experience this performance. This strategy increases the variety of receptive audiences for my compositions and will allow for greater intercultural interaction and visibility between different cultures.

The idea of this monograph is to present an overview of decisive theoretical, computational, technological, aesthetical, artistic, economical, and sociological directions to create future music. It features a unique insight into dominant scientific and artistic new directions, which are guaranteed by the authors' prominent publications in books, software, musical, and dance productions. This book fills a gap between theory and creativity in musicianship. This frequently observed gap fixes theory as a rigidified level of thought, where creativity is excluded from a canonized corpus of ideas. Creativity, on the other hand, is preconceived as a theory-less, wild activity that blossoms while performing pre-composed musical structures. This book provides a discussion of the creative drive in theory and theory-inspired thoughts while understanding how these ideas shape performance. The future of music is only as limited as one’s imagination, and, to this end, the text illuminates examples of creative musicianship.

In this book I present a series of eleven essays written between 1978 and 1987 on subjects relevant to the anthropology of health and international health. The issues addressed in these essays were investigated during 38 months of fieldwork in rural southwest peninsular India (197 4-86) and 15 months of fieldwork in southwest Sri Lanka (1983-84 ). ;During various periods of this time I conducted ethnographic fieldwork, explored the feasibility of participatory community research, facilitated the development of a postgraduate health education training program, and served as a consultant to various international health organizations. The essays document my ongoing attempts to integrate academic interests in the anthropology of health with applications of anthropology for international health and development. The volume is divided into four sections structured around the themes of: ethnophysiology, illness ethnography, pharmaceutical related behavior, and health communication. Included are studies of fertility and pregnancy (Chapters 1 and 2), states of malnutrition and approaches to nutrition education (Chapters 5 and 11 ), diarrheal disease and water boiling behavior (Chapters 6 and 1 0), and lay perceptions of fertility control methods and medicines (Chapters 3 and 7). Emerging from these studies is a recognition that perceptions of ethnophysiology and contingent health concerns signifi cantly influence health behavior and the use as well as demand for traditional and modern health resources.

The book examines how the understanding of the global and the local has changed in response to ongoing reconfigurations between the state and society. It also emphasizes the importance of schooling as an institution both within and across national contexts, a holistic approach that helps us move beyond a conglomeration of isolated local events to pay attention to global trends. In this regard, the book underscores the richness of contextual factors that may create opportunities for innovation, or may serve as constraints in the implementation process. As a whole, the book brings new questions about globalization and the imperatives of education policy and implementation.
