Synopsis Robbed at Pen Point by : Randy Johnston
Nothing can be more upsetting than being cheated by those you trust. This is the story of systematic thievery taking place in society today, with the esteemed professionals whom we trust stealing us blind. Woody Guthrie said it best, that some will rob you with a six-gun and some with a fountain pen. This book -- part reference, part memoir and part cautionary tale -- tells the reader how to pursue financial malpractice claims against lawyers, stockbrokers, accountants, financial planners, money managers and business partners. Using examples from famous cases and those previously unreported, the author explains fraud from planning to execution, and offers tips for recovering some of the stolen money and working with the law to take action against an offender. Written with great attention to detail, this guide gives the average person tools to avoid scams and the means to take action if something goes wrong.

Synopsis Superhighway Robbery by : Graeme R. Newman
This book analyzes the expanding crime opportunities created by the Internet and e-commerce, and it explains how concepts of crime prevention developed in other contexts can be effectively applied in this new environment. The authors note that the Internet and associated e-commerce constitute a lawless "wild frontier" where users of the Internet can anonymously exploit and victimize other users without a high risk of being detected, arrested, prosecuted, and punished. For acquisitive criminals who seek to gain money by stealing it from others, e-commerce through the Internet enables them to "hack" their way into bank records and transfer funds for their own enrichment. Computer programs that are readily available for download on the Web can be used to scan the Web for individual computers that are vulnerable to attack. By using the Internet addresses of other users or using another person's or organization's computers or computing environment, criminals can hide their trails and escape detection. After identifying the multiple opportunities for crime in the world of e-commerce, the book describes specific steps that can be taken to prevent e-commerce crime at particular points of vulnerability. The authors explain how two aspects of situational crime prevention can prevent Internet crime. This involves both a targeting of individual vulnerabilities and a broad approach that requires partnerships in producing changes and modifications that can reduce or eliminate criminal opportunities. The authors apply the 16 techniques of situational crime prevention to the points of vulnerability of the e-commerce system. The points of vulnerability are identified and preventive measures are proposed. In discussing the broad approach of institutionalized and systemic efforts to police e-commerce, the book focuses on ways to increase the risks of detection and sanctions for crime without undue intrusions on the freedom and privacy of legitimate Internet and e-commerce users.

Synopsis America Robbed Blind by : Greg Farrell
Just months after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, American investors came under attack. Two of the nation's biggest corporations, Enron and WorldCom, admitted that they had overstated their earnings by billions of dollars. As those two titans collapsed into bankruptcy, shareholders were stuck with almost $200 billion in losses.Accounting scams were also exposed at Adelphia and HealthSouth. Tyco's board of directors eventually realized that its earnings needed to be restated, even as its top two executives were charged with larceny. The people and organizations responsible for protecting investors?Congress, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the big Wall Street banks that lent billions to these fraudulent enterprises?fell down on their jobs. Worse, Congress actually wrote laws that provided incentives for executives to cheat their own investors.Throughout the 1990s Congress systematically starved the SEC to the point where the securities cops could barely do their jobs.America Robbed Blind exposes the root causes of the accounting scandals that wiped out $500 billion worth of investments in U.S. stocks. It explains how a series of seemingly minor Congressional actions--from a law penalizing corporations for paying salaries in excess of $1 million to a Senate vote to scuttle a rule calling for the expensing of stock options--created the conditions that led to the accounting abuses that eroded investor confidence among the 95 million Americans who own stocks. One of the reasons that ethically challenged corporations were able to fool investors for so long is that most Americans don't have the time to sift through mountains of corporate filings or detailed financial reports laden with accounting jargon and legalese. In simple, explanatory prose, America Robbed Blind makes it easy to understand the fraud that occurred in recent years and proposes several reforms to ensure that these abuses never occur again.202 pagesHardcover
