Practical advice about dealing with parasites

We first discussed the possibility of organizing a symposium on helminth communities in June, 1986. At that time, we were engaged in writing a joint paper on potential structuring mechanisms in helminth communities; we disagreed on a number of issues. We felt the reason for such debate was because the discipline was in a great state of flux, with many new concepts and approaches being introduced with increasing frequency. After consider able discussion about the need, scope and the inevitable limitations of such a symposium, we decided that the time was ripe to bring other ecologists, engaged in similar research, face-to-face. There were many individuals from whom to choose; we selected those who were actively publishing on helminth communities or those who had expertise in areas which we felt were particularly appropriate. We compiled a list of potential participants, contacted them and received unanimous support to organize such a symposium. Our intent was to cover several broad areas, fully recognizing that breadth negates depth (at least with a publisher's limitation on the number of pages). We felt it important to consider patterns amongst different kinds of hosts because this is where we had disagreed among ourselves.

This second volume is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of reptilian parasites. Information is comprehensive and presented in annotated outline form for quick reference. Chapters are divided by arthropod groups - mites, ticks, flies and true bugs - and include descriptions, hosts, host locations, sources of infection and life cycles. The text also includes a chapter on laboratory procedures for the herpetoculturist, and a bibliography of approximately 340 references.

Parasitology in Snakes, Lizards and Chelonians is a two part publication covering the principles of parasitic disease and the individual parasites. The text includes instructions on detecting health problems as well as the important information and orientation guide in the case of an immediate parasitological finding. Colour photographs, antiparasitic drug charts and a glossary of terms are included in this thorough publication.

While diseases of free-ranging and captive mammalian and avian wildlife species have received considerable interest in the past 25 years, those of amphibians and reptiles (collectively, the herptiles) generally have been assigned lesser importance. The literature concern ing disease in herptiles is widely scattered, consisting chiefly of case reports and prevalence surveys, and with heavy emphasis on captive reptiles. The dynamics of the host-agent-environment relationship have been studied for only a few diseases. This diverse data base is primarily a function of the paucity of investigators whose chief interest is in diseases of herptiles. This first edition represents an effort to bring together some of the diffuse knowledge on infectious and non-infectious diseases of free-ranging and captive herp tiles. Issue may be taken with the choice of topics; how ever, predominant diseases, as well as some diseases of lesser prominence, are presented. The editors were forced to accept certain omissions, particularly with amphibian diseases, simply for lack of contributors. The resulting text, however, we hope will be of value to veterinarians, herpetolo,gists, wildlife disease investigators, wildlife managers, zoo curators, and university students. G.L. Hoff F.L.
