This book examines the climatic and economic origins of the last national famine to occur in Scotland, the nature and extent of the crisis which ensued, and what the impact of the famine was upon the population in demographic, economic and social terms. Current published knowledge about the causes, extent, and impact of the famine in Scotland is limited and many conclusions have been speculative in the absence of extensive research. Despite the critical importance of this crisis, one of the four disasters of the 1690s, which are widely acknowledged to have contributed to the economic arguments in favour of the Union of the Parliaments in 1707, the topic has been largely neglected and even underplayed by historians. This is the first full study of the famine, providing a unique scholarly examination of the causes, course, characteristics and consequences of the crisis. A comprehensive study of agricultural, climatic, economic, social and demographic issues, the book seeks to establish answers to the fundamental question concerning the event. How serious was it? Using detailed statistical and qualitative analysis, it discusses the regional factors that defined the famine, the impact on the population, and the interconnected causes of this traumatic event.

Excerpt from Records of the General Synod of Ulster, From 1691 to 1820, Vol. 1 of 3: 1691-1720 The project of publishing the manuscript Minutes of the Proceedings of the General Synod of Ulster originated in a suggestion of the late Rev. Thomas Witherow, D. D., LL. D., Professor of Church History and Pastoral Theology in Magee College, Londonderry. Professor Witherow, in 1871, on the recommendation of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland - of which the Synod of Ulster since 1840 has been a constituent part - obtained from the Synod the loan of its unprinted records, then in the keeping of the Rev. Robert Park, Clerk of the Synod and First Clerk of the Assembly; and also received permission to make extracts from them for historical and literary purposes. A similar use of the records had been previously enjoyed by Professor James Seaton Reid, D. D., M. R. I. A., former Clerk of the Synod and of the Assembly, and by Professor W. D. Killen, D. D., President of the Assembly's College, Belfast. In 1872, when returning the minutes and thanking by letter the Synod for their use, Dr. Witherow suggested that the official records from 1691 to 1803 should be printed, lest an accident might lead to their destruction. This communication was referred to the Assembly then in session, with the recommendation that steps should be taken to have the suggestion carried out; but though a committee was nominated to inquire and report on the expediency of the undertaking, and this committee had the subject before it for two years, at the end of that time it was thought unwise to proceed, until a more prosperous condition of the fund of the Church which is available for such purposes, and a livelier interest of the members in the publication, would warrant the necessary outlay. In 1877, a memorial to the Assembly from the Presbyterian Historical Society of the United States of America, asking for books, documents, and other material which might illustrate Presbyterian history, and an application from the minister of another denomination for leave to consult the manuscript records of the Synod, revived the idea of their publication; and a Committee of the Assembly for Historical Purposes was appointed, with the present Clerk of the Synod and Clerk of the Assembly as Convener, and directed among other duties to inquire into the cost of putting the ancient minutes through the press and to take steps to raise funds for that object.
